I have been in the environmental stewardship business for the past 35+ years and remain passionate about making sure we manage environmental contamination and make sure that we are actively pursuing a path to environmental sustainability in the future. Stewardship activities have included environmental remediation and monitoring, and development of green processes for clean energy. SRNL is the DOE-EM and DOE-LM Corporate Laboratory, so leads environmental stewardship activities for the DOE-EM/LM Complex. Collaborating with other DOE National Laboratories, universities, and industry we help to develop and implement technologies to manage environmental contamination and keeping the public safe.As Director of the Earth, Biological and Quantitative Systems Science Division at SRNL, I lead an organization of top-notch scientists and engineers who are responsible for developing the SRNL core competency to accelerate remediation, minimize waste and reduce risk as it relates to legacy DOE waste issues.Ongoing initiatives include:• SRNL Regulatory Center of Excellence (RCE) which was set up to facilitate conversations between DOE sites and associated stakeholders. Activities include regulatory support for the DOE-EM Soil and Groundwater Closure Program, DOE-Nuclear Energy Consent Based Siting Program for spent nuclear fuel, and a Congressionally mandated program to provide a life cycle assessment for fluoropolymer compounds related to clean energy. • Advanced Long-term Environmental Monitoring System (ALTEMIS) is a multidisciplinary program to decrease overall monitoring costs for legacy DOE waste sites through application of artificial intelligence/machine learning controlled sensor networks. This effort is part of the larger SRNL led DOE-EM program looking at updated site needs related to soil and groundwater remediation.• SRNL/Battelle Savannah River Alliance (BSRA) Mesoscale Transport and Flux Facility (MTaFF) technical resources to tackle environmental challenges. This effort provides cutting-edge environmental remediation and monitoring solutions from scientists and engineers from SRNL, University of South Carolina, Clemson University, South Carolina State University, University of Georgia, and the Georgia Institute of Technology.• Collaboration with the Three Rivers Solid Waste Technology Center to provide solutions monitor and mitigate landfill emissions, as well as extending the life of the landfill by providing waste-to-energy processes for recovery of value-added products from municipal solid waste.

Environmental Microbiologist - Senior Staff ScientistIdaho National Laboratory - Battelle Energy Alliance Feb 2005 - Jun 2013Idaho Falls, IdEnvironmental systems biology research:• Sequencing and analysis of hot spring metagenomes from Yellowstone National Park and the Alvord Desert for bacterial and functional diversity• Isolation and characterization of extremophilic bacteria that produce lignocellulose degrading enzymes• Transcriptome analysis of thermophilic bacteria and algae using high-density microarrays• Isolation and characterization of thermophilic acetogens for conversion of carbon dioxide to value added chemicals• Metabolomic flux analysis of thermoacidophilic bacteria using various separation technologies coupled to ion trap or time-of-flight mass spectrometers• Development of environmental systems biology approaches to understand nutrient cycling within microbial communities through the application of high-throughput molecular techniques and metabolic modeling• Analysis of aerobic bacterial populations responsible for chlorinated solvent co-metabolism using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction• Development of remediation strategies for metals and radionuclides including chromium, uranium and technetium -
Advisory ScientistIdaho National Engineering And Environmental Laboratory Nov 2002 - Jan 2005Idaho Falls, IdPerformed research related to biotransformation of environmental contaminants, ranging from petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, metals (chromium) and radionuclides (uranium, technetium). Research was performed over a range of scales, from laboratory microcosm experiments to mesoscale tank (6’ x 10’ x 6’) experiments. During this time, I was also involved in the development of a well construction system that decreased microbial fouling in monitoring and water wells (US Patents: 6,810,957 B2 and 7,090,016 B2). In addition, I lead research related to sequestration of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through calcium carbonate precipitation catalyzed by the metabolism of cyanobacteria.
