Using the IEUBK (Integrated Exposure Uptake Biokinetic) model for estimating blood lead in children, I performed a literature review to determine the effect that use of traditional lead glazed ceramics and the concentrations of lead in other media have on the blood lead levels of children (specifically children in Mexico City), as well as to learn best practices for using the model through the documentation. The IEUBK is a model developed by the EPA for determining the expected blood lead levels of children ages 0-7 based on environmental factors; such as lead in dust, water, air, and food. During my literature review, I searched for papers containing data currently applicable to Mexico City, which were often in Spanish. I used this data and RStudio to create distributions to populate the model with 70,000 simulated children, stratified among the boroughs of Mexico City. I then performed a sensitivity analysis of the various parameters that are present in the IEUBK to determine their impact on the simulated population.Based on the output from the model and my sensitivity analysis, I concluded lead glazed ceramics are the largest contributor to elevated blood lead levels in Mexico City children. I presented these findings in a poster at the Illinois State Academy of Sciences meeting, and again in an event open to the campus. After I graduated, I began the work to make sure that the next person to take up the project would be able to seamlessly begin from where I left off. This involved rewriting my code to be more modular and better documented, as well as creating an appendix of all of my data, methods, and reasoning.

After my graduation in May I began working as an assistant in Dr. Greenfield's environmental science lab, which is currently focusing on metal contamination patterns in the St. Louis Metro East area. During that time I have been instructed in the use of Google Earth and GIS software as a sampling site evaluation tool. I have also assisted in collecting soil samples in areas with a history of industry, including Superfund sites. In the lab I have prepared soil samples for trace metal analysis with an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectrometer, as well as tested water for lead and nitrate levels using a photometer.
