Staff Flight Analyst
In Charge Of Functional Safety
As Canoo's functional safety lead, I owned all strategy, policy, process, budget, and headcount for implementing functional safety compliance across Canoo vehicles. Primary responsibilities included building the functional safety team, developing all processes and infrastructure for functional safety in Canoo, establishing the vision, goals, and strategy for functional safety, and managing functional safety contracts and contractors. This included developing ISO 26262 processes within the company, and laying the foundation for the FMEA process at Canoo. Finally, I held approval authority for the safety assessment while releasing parts, and consulted on all safety-related engineering trades and analyses within the company.
Manager Of Trajectory Analysis
I managed the Trajectory Analysis team at SpaceX, which I grew to consist of six full-time positions to keep up with launching a new Falcon mission every two weeks. Presently, the team owns hardware-in-the-loop testing for the autonomous flight termination system; Flight Plan authoring and approval by Federal safety agencies (FAA, 30th Space Wing, 45th Space Wing); developing an ability to quantify public risk posed by any given Falcon mission in a manner compliant with the Code of Federal Regulations Title 14, Chapter 3, Subchapter C; analysis and data review associated with the tracking sensors used in the AFTS; and scaling all of our per-mission processes to launch more than 40 vehicles per year in the future.
Lead Trajectory Analysis Engineer
In this role, I grew and developed the Trajectory Analysis Team at SpaceX which presently consists of six full-time positions. This team was created from the groundwork I laid as a Lead Flight Safety Systems Engineer. The team owned hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testing of the first approved and fielded autonomous flight termination system on an orbital class launch vehicle.In 2017 we flew the first autonomous flight termination system in an active role. This was the first wholly autonomous system which protected the by-standing public from any anomalies that could endanger the public during a Falcon launch. My team and I personally developed all of the software logic associated with detecting vehicle liftoff, vehicle staging, burn starts and stops, off-nominal conditions, and safe completion of the mission for both the orbital second stage and first stage landings.The Trajectory Analysis team also managed flight safety approval for the first Falcon Heavy launch in 2018, including approval of using the AFTS to manage public risk for the dual-booster land-landing conducted as part of that mission. The Trajectory Analysis Team also took over ownership of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy Flight Plans and approval, management of the pre-launch Conjunction on Launch Assessment (COLA) process, and all other flight safety analysis tasks at SpaceX.
Lead Flight Safety System Engineer
As a Lead Flight Safety Systems Engineer, I started team at SpaceX which solicited flight safety approval from the 45th Space Wing of the first land-landing of a launch vehicle ever performed in 2015. We also designed and developed the flight termination system destruct criteria used to protect the by-standing public from an errant booster as part of this effort.In this role, I began my career as a technical lead and people-manager at SpaceX. I hired and mentored multiple interns and brought on my first full-time employee at SpaceX, thus laying the foundation to build a Trajectory Analysis team. I worked with my team to develop a scalable process for producing and garnering Federal approval of SpaceX Flight Plans for all Falcon 9 missions based on vehicle Monte Carlo analysis. We also adapted and codified the flight safety destruct criteria into a software-readable format for use in the first fielded autonomous flight termination system. (AFTS) I personally designed the software tests and hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) tests and test plans for these destruct criteria during this timeframe. We were able to scale these tests to successfully perform thousands of software and HITL tests prior to flight. Finally, we performed multiple fly-along in flight tests of the autonomous flight termination system successfully.
Flight Safety System Engineer
I began my SpaceX career working under the Launch Chief Engineer as a Flight Safety System Engineer under SpaceX Mission Assurance. I worked on many aspects of the launch process in this role, including management of SpaceX's engineering change system, anomaly investigation and management, review and deployment of launch commit criteria by all engineering disciplines, and various data review and analyses associated both with hardware-in-the-loop testing, flight performance, mission operations, and manufacturing.
