I took six months off to focus on being a dad, work through life transitions, read, and reflect on what I wanted to give to my kids, myself, and the world in the next chapter of my career. If you have the opportunity to take a meaningful break, I highly recommend it.

The Conservation Alliance engages businesses to fund and partner with organizations to protect wild places for their habitat and recreation values.

Founded by Douglas Tompkins and led by Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, Tompkins Conservation creates terrestrial and marine national parks in Chile and Argentina, reintroduces missing species, conserves biodiversity, restores degraded lands, encourages environmental activism, and fosters economic vitality as a consequence of conservation.Responsibilities included:• Align and coordinate global fundraising, representing and speaking to the diverse programs and strategic priorities in Chile, Argentina and beyond• Work with Kristine Tompkins, US staff, and country program leads to create comprehensive multi-national campaigns and country-specific mini-campaigns• Train and support Chile and Argentina staff as they work to become more financially independence. Support the launch and growth of friends groups and other NGOs as needed.

• Led, managed, and advanced the mission of the Access Fund, the national advocacy organization dedicated to keeping U.S. climbing areas open and conserving the climbing environment• Led fundraising team to generate $3.4M annually through major gift solicitations, corporate partnerships, foundations and grants, events, and membership• Advocated for and represented the interests of climbers through direct communication with federal agencies, Congress, administration officials, corporations, business leaders, the outdoor industry, philanthropists, etc.• Conserved land and promoted public access by finding common ground with a broad base of partners, including industry, traditional environmental organizations, Native American tribes, conservation groups, hunters and anglers, outdoor education organizations, and many others• Completed successful capital campaign to launch the first-ever revolving loan acquisition program to save threatened climbing areas—24 projects completed to date. Awarded land trust accreditation by the Land Trust Alliance in 2015• Conceived and launched the Conservation Team in partnership with Jeep (Chrysler) to provide hands-on climbing area stewardship and training throughout the U.S.• Led unprecedented discussions and negotiations between the climbing community and the Bears Ears Inter- Tribal Coalition, resulting in mutual letters of support to the Obama Administration advocating for the establishment of Bears Ears National Monument, meaningful tribal involvement in the management of the monument, and the inclusion of climbing in the Presidential proclamation• Sued Trump Administration over unlawful executive order to reduce Bears Ears National Monument. Case is ongoing

• Direct responsibility for safety, quality and efficiency of all program operations• Supervised 10 direct and over 150 indirect reports in 7 domestic and international programming areas, managed multi-million dollar budget• Led strategic development of innovative new programs, pre-season trainings, safety systems and course materials, provided confident, stable leadership during times of uncertainty and challenge• Restructured, unified and inspired the program department to enhance consistency and quality of course delivery, centralized financial and logistical functions to increase efficiency • Regularly conducted safety reviews for other Outward Bound schools, prepared annual safety report, conducted in-depth analysis of each year’s most significant incidents

• Responsible for all aspects of the program, including safety management, course area development, staff hiring and training, policies and procedures, curriculum, logistics and finance; worked with great autonomy and little outside support• Reconnoitered and created Patagonia program and Ecuador program from scratch; growth eventually necessitated the creation of the Program Director position• Designed and delivered new course types based on student feedback, including a 50-day semester and sea kayaking courses• Orchestrated hand-off to new leadership, program continues to thrive

• Seven major international expeditions, including two with The North Face, received support through sponsorships, photography, writing, slide shows and grants, including the Lyman Spitzer award• First ascents in Pakistan, Patagonia, Peru and North America• Photography clients include The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Climbing, Rock & Ice, Backpacker, Outside magazine, Outward Bound and NOLS

• Instructed rock climbing courses for students and aspirant instructors in the Wind River range in WY, Mt. Lemon and Cochise Stronghold in AZ, and the Cascades in WA

• Managed technical rock climbing program; trained, supervised and evaluated climbing staff in technical climbing, guiding and rescue• Course directed and instructed a variety of courses, including semester courses, educator courses, standard courses for youth and adults and instructor trainings• Respected as exemplary instructor and mentor to new staff in both technical and interpersonal areas; wrote curriculums for most NCOBS course types• Received the Buckley Bearing Award for outstanding vision and leadership
