Academic Tutor
Starting in 2021, I began offering a one-on-one tutoring service for middle schoolers and rising high schoolers. I assisted the students primarily with algebra, geometry, and basic trigonometry.I tailored the material to each student's personal needs, and I catered to his/her individual learning style. I helped students develop an understanding of a concept they were struggling with, augmented their adeptness in a unit, and/or even began working with them on more advanced topics to move them ahead of their peers. My services were effective and had a proven track record of helping students achieve their individual goals. For instance, I worked with one student over the course of a summer to master advanced geometric concepts. At the end of the summer, the student scored high enough on their school's math placement test to place out of a regular geometry class and into an honors course.Though I mostly served as a math tutor, I taught other subjects too, such as Spanish, English, and middle-school level science.
News Intern
During the summer of 2022, I worked as a News Intern with Ideastream Public Media, Cleveland's NPR member station. During this seven-week internship, I gained experience in various aspects of investigative journalism.During my time at Ideastream, I wrote seven stories that were featured on Ideastream's webpage. I crafted some stories primarily using my own research, whether that be searching the internet for Juneteenth celebrations for my piece on how the holiday was being celebrated in Northeast Ohio or gaining access to police reports to write about a series of mail thefts occurring in the Cleveland area. Other pieces, however, required me to interview people to gain information for my stories. I learned valuable skills in formulating relevant and insightful questions, as well as simply holding a conversation with someone I'm unfamiliar with. I interviewed several people around Cleveland, including the Executive Director of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo as part of a story about a new baby rhino being introduced to the zoo.Additionally, I learned how to use the software Grove CMS to upload the stories I composed onto Ideastream's webpage. I gained experience in formatting the articles to be visually appealing to a reader.I also wrote Cut and Copy scripts for Ideastream's afternoon radio show. I combined my own reporting with a brief audio clip, either from an interview I conducted or from one of the various press conferences I attended (including ones with the NOAA and Sen. Rob Portman) to provide the radio host with a 30-40 second script to read. To properly edit the audio, I learned to use Adobe Audition. Thanks to my time at Ideastream, I can more deftly compose pieces of journalistic writing, I can hold more meaningful interviews, and I can more efficiently conduct research. Here is a link to the seven web stories I wrote as a News Intern: https://www.ideastream.org/news/people/braedon-olsen
