Was exposed to industry-level software development throughout this summer internship program at MarketAxess. In the PostTrade division, I joined a scrum team as we approached the end of a program increment. My task included creating an end-to-end application to process incoming client files. These client files contain their trade transactions and were previously stored in Amazon AWS EFS. My application processed these files, often containing tens of thousands of transactions each, and encrypted the sensitive PII fields before archiving them for long-term storage in Amazon AWS S3. Due to the size of these files, efficiency measures were used such as multithreading the application using Java's ThreadPoolExecutor. Overall, costs were reduced by storing these files more efficiently in AWS S3 which is much cheaper and better suited to this situation than AWS EFS.The experience made a huge difference in helping me understand what software engineering and development looks like at an industry level. Working in a scrum team put me right in the shoes of a full-time software engineer. I particularly enjoyed learning about how Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) is employed to ensure reliability and quality assurance when so many teams and developers are collaborating on large-scale systems using Red Hat Openshift and Jenkins deployment pipelines.More details:• Built a Springboot application to encrypt and archive XML files of over 10000 trade transactions in a scrum team.• Consumed from a Kafka topic as a trigger for new files received, which were then read from EFS and stored in S3.• Implemented multithreading using Java ThreadPoolExecutor to speed up the application by a factor of 2.9x.• Configured an S3 lifecycle policy instead of EFS to reduce costs by $45 per month per 10000 files.• Other tools used: AWS IAM, ROSA, Jenkins, Docker, Avro deserialization, AES encryption.

This included logging backups, managing different anti-virus software and documentation.More details:• Delivered assistance and support for team-based IT projects at CloudIT - a company focused on IT support, network management and security.• Installed virus protection to field computers using Kaseya remote access software.• Shadowed personnel to learn methods to solve troubleshooting technical issues for clients.• Monitored and logged daily server backups, tasks and reports for over 30 client companies.• Contributed to over 20% of the total documentation.

Tutored Maths and English to children aged 7-15 - I aided them with their work as well as monitored their progress using reports.• Tutored diverse groups of students, assisting them to complete homework sheets - identifying lagging skills, correcting weaknesses and boosting confidence through positive reinforcement strategies. • Adapted to behavior and abilities of new children, working with over 30 different students every week. • Met with parents to discuss student progress and address concerns. • Maintained tutoring records to adjust instruction and update parents on student progress.
