Integrated Pest Management Specialist
CurrentI am the coordinator of Phipps' integrated pest management (IPM) program, focused on environmentally responsible and least-toxic pest management strategies. This includes managing biological control releases, researching and using least toxic pesticides when applicable, and working to educate staff on pesticide safety and proper integrated pest management practices. My goal is to improve Phipps' IPM program by making it more sustainable, efficient, and effective, while educating staff and the community on mindful pest management tactics and environmentalism. I am responsible for pest management in the production greenhouses, conservatory rooms, outdoor gardens, and all food, office, and classroom spaces. I educate staff by working with them on their pest problems and providing trainings throughout the year for them to expand their knowledge.I manage the USDA inspected butterfly room. These duties include making sure the rooms follow guidelines, working with chrysalid suppliers, making sure butterflies are healthy and being handled appropriately, and working to improve the exhibit. Along with training staff, I teach adult education classes on plant health care, identifying insects, pollinator gardening, and other entomology/pest management topics. I have given presentations on environmentally mindful pest management through Phipps' Climate Toolkit and the American Public Garden Association.
