Plant and environmental sciencesUsing custom oligonucleotide gene expression microarrays I investigated the effects of multiple environmental parameters on the molecular switch from vegetative to reproductive growth on Agaricus bisporus, the white button mushroom. This project identified previously uncharacterised genes that are linked to three specific switches, carbon dioxide, eight carbon volatiles and temperature and gave us an insight on how the fungus uses these factors to identify the optimal position and conditions to initiate reproductive growth. During this project I also optimized a method to extract high quality, pure total RNA from soil and peat with high lignin content. I finished my PhD while working for Agilent Technologies where I provided technical support for microarray and bioanalyzer applications.
