About Brande Wulff

My research focuses on fundamental and applied aspects of plant-microbe interactions. I am interested in how microbial effector proteins, their host targets, and plant immune receptors co-evolve. My work seeks to translate knowledge of this interaction into practical solutions for genetic disease control in agricultural systems. My focus is on bread wheat and two major diseases of wheat – stem rust and Septoria tritici blotch (STB). Also, I am interested in the mechanism and evolution of a novel gene-for-gene resistance between wheat and Zymoseptoria tritici, the causal agent of STB. My long-term goal is to understand this mechanism, and to provide resistance gene–based solutions to prevalent disease threats in the UK and worldwide.

    I established the 2Blades group at The Sainsbury Laboratory alongside Eric Ward, former PI of the group and President of the 2Blades Foundation, USA. As Research Manager my tasks included the recruitment of personnel, the establishment and management of a portfolio of projects addressing important diseases of major crops, and the supervision of a the group consisting of Team Leaders, Postdocs, Research Assistants, and PhD Students. I raised >£1M in external funds and assisted in securing an industrial partnership with a major seed company. I developed strong links locally with the John Innes Centre (JIC), The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC), and the University of East Anglia (UEA), and links nationally and internationally, through scientific collaborations, presentations, joint supervision of students, participation in PhD committees, and teaching.
