Such problems include the high rate of evictions in Hampton Roads; local public housing authorities' policy of favoring 'shallow subsidies,' over 'deep subsidies'; Housing Voucher Choice recipients' lack of access to non-segregated, mixed income neighborhoods; the debilitation of affordable public and private housing; discrimination; and tenant-screening practices that often violate the Fair Housing Act and Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act.In addition to litigation, the fellowship will find ways to empower tenants by assisting in the formation of tenant advocacy groups, housing workshops, and conducting door-to-door outreach.Finally, the fellowship provides an opportunity to work with other Housing Justice Program fellows across Virginia to address statewide problems.During this fellowship, I have filed affirmative litigation under the Federal False Claims Act; 42 U.S.C. 1983; the Virginia Consumer Protection Act; the Fair Housing Act; and the Federal Fair Debt Collections Practice Act.
