I am an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Technical Communication and Information Design at the University of Colorado—Colorado Springs. I previously worked as Assistant Professor of Technical Communication at Sam Houston State University where I directed the program in Technical Communication, including directing the MA in Technical Communication, chairing the committee that oversees the introductory service course, and directing the Iris Technical-Communication Suite. At SHSU, I taught undergraduate and graduate courses in writing, editing, rhetoric, and technical communication. While at SHSU, I was awarded the David Payne Academic Community Engagement Award for my work bridging the classroom with community partners.At MD Anderson, I edited basic science and clinical research manuscripts at the top-rated cancer center in the United States. I held writing consultations with authors, gave presentations to healthcare professionals about effective writing, and worked with colleagues to develop webinars about communicating scientific research. I also wrote articles for OncoLog, a monthly publication for physicians. I have worked as a technical writer in the oil and gas industry for a decade, helping engineers research, write, and edit dozens of technical papers for SPE conferences and proceedings. I also write case stories for marketing communications.I earned my Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Rhetoric from Texas Tech. My dissertation examined patient-centered communication practices in patient manuals about diabetes using rhetorical analysis and eye-tracking methods. My current research projects include examining the role of generative AI in tech comm pedagogy and the convergence of technical communication and marketing communication.
