Community Building - Programs When I was transitioning into living on campus, it was extremally difficult for me to adjust to this new lifestyle. So as a Resident Assistant since I understand these difficulties first hand I wanted to create a caring environment that felt like home for the residents. One of the ways that I thought I would help to create this environment was by creating a program celebrating the birthdays of all the residents on the floor throughout the fall and spring semesters. The way I celebrate the resident’s birthday through this program on the floor is by first telling happy birthday via group chat and in person so the whole fifth-floor community can tell them happy birthday. Then I write the resident a personal note that has a balloon and about three pieces of can attached to it and leave it on their door, and I keep doing this throughout the semester. As a result of these actions, I have made the residents feel more connected with one another, and they feel as though their floor is truly a place they can call home. RA Responsibilities - Crisis Situations Around the beginning of the fall semester, there was a situation where a suites electricity went out, and the electricity wouldn’t come back on even if I went into the electrical closest to try and turn it on manually. So, I showed the residents how to fill out a maintenance request for the problem, and I radioed maintenance since it was an emergency. Then once I was informed that the maintenance staff was on their way, I stayed with the residence to explain to them that everything would be okay and to make sure they weren’t overly stressed about the situation. After maintenance came, they came and informed us of the problem, and fixed it, and I was able to learn about the steps I could tell them to take in the future to make sure they didn’t experience the same problem again.

Residential Curriculum -Bulletin BoardOne of the bulletin boards I feel was a huge success was the one I did at the beginning of the semester. It was an interactive bulletin board on the topic of transitioning to college and college myths. The bulletin board had two pictures of two different versions of the same character one that was a high school version and another one that was a college version. Also, it was interactive because in order to see the information you had to lift the pictures of watches that covered up the information. The reason it was a huge success was because during the move-in process at the beginning of the fall semester I noticed a lot of parents and students would stop to look at my bulletin board, and even told other RA’s and myself how beautiful and informative they thought it was.
