Most people never get the chance to live in another country. Fortunately, I grew up on a completely different continent. My family moved from Mission Viejo, California, to Hangzhou, China, and my life was flipped upside down. I was dropped into a completely new culture, language, way of life, etc… At first, the new world that was now home seemed intimidating. A language barrier, culture shock, and intimidation surrounded me, but that didn’t phase me. I learned Mandarin and was able to effectively converse with my friends and locals. Immersing myself in a completely different culture molded me into a different person. Now, I apply the same mentality to every aspect of my life. Instead of being intimidated by challenges, I am now ready and eager to conquer obstacles. Moving to China at a young age forced me to adapt to the new culture, food, people, and language around me. What was harder was moving back to Southern California 5 years later. I had learned Mandarin, had a plethora of friends, and enjoyed my life assimilating into the Chinese culture, but I had to finish my last two years of high school back in Southern California. Being dropped into a new high school forced me to adapt again. It was a whole new world where I had to make new friends, and adapt to the customs that now seemed foreign.
