    Research Technician 4
Los Alamos National Laboratory Jan 2021 - Present
Los Alamos, New Mexico, United States
I plan and schedule a 7-member team that characterizes and classifies radiological and special nuclear material in a mixed-use research environment. We separate nuclear material and stabilize it for shipping to other labs or for final disposition at disposal sites. I am responsible for the plan-of-the-day and plan-of-the-week scheduling for our team. This establishes priorities, optimizes shipping, technical and human resources from our team and supporting groups, ensures that all required specialists are available when needed and that tasks are completed efficiently and on time. I have created and oversee the use of multiple scheduling tools for my Team Leader and Deputy Group Leader to track completion of work. I perform lessons learned analyses with management for Continuous Process Improvement, identifying critical failures, designing recovery approaches, and I support measurement, characterization, quantification and packaging of radiological materials.I am responsible for maintaining a full understanding of nuclear material accountancy for each planned activity to ensure nuclear safety, security and safeguards compliance while optimizing operations and shipments. I have primary responsibility for decommissioning nuclear materials from multipole R&D facilities. This requires frequent collaboration with other teams and groups to meet the material shipment objectives while maintaining full regulatory security, accounting, and RCRA compliance. I am responsible for training new hires and ensuring implementation of team goals and processes.

I served as the acting Chemical/Biological/Radiological/Nuclear (CBRN) Non-Commissioned-Officer-in-Charge (NCOIC) for the 9th Detachment of the 8th Space Company during a year-long deployment to Iraq. As the acting CBRN NCOIC of Detachment 9, I was in charge of ensuring all soldiers were fully equipped and properly trained on how to use their chemical gear, and verified that the masks issued were the correct fit and that they knew how to don and clear them quickly. I also assisted with shipping and proper labeling of hazardous containers from Iraq to the United States. In addition to serving as the Chemical Weapon’s Specialist, I performed building and fence security and assisted with maintenance on our satellite communication equipment.

During a month-long training exercise, I was the liaison between our Company and Brigade headquarters due to satellite communication failure. As a liaison, I accurately relayed mission orders to the Company after personally briefing Brigade the number of personnel and equipment we had ready for mobilization if needed for a mission as well as what equipment was currently down, nonfunctioning and the number of staff who were at the medics tent. I completed the Leadership Development assessment course and spent the next year assisting soldiers on how to lead their squads and platoons properly.
