Responsible for operating the park’s research vessel, Serac, a 53-foot Madutech Class 3 vessel capable of long distance coastal travel. Coordinated vessel operations with 2-person crew and up to 6 researchers, ranging from glaciologists, geologists, marine mammal scientists, to archaeologists along the south-central Alaska outer coast from Nuka Bay to Resurrection Bay.

Conduct vessel-based surveys for seismic, research, and bathymetric mapping. Serve as captain of skiff for research and geophysical survey activities, assist with all marine operations, maintenance of vessel, training deck crew, and ensuring safety of all staff, personnel, and live-aboard scientists. Crane operator and deck boss for geotechnical surveys, including piston coring and CPT deployment.

Responsible for the construction, deployment, and retrieval of offshore, oceanographic sensor moorings. These moorings are a part of PISCO’s (Partnership for the Interdisciplinary Study of Coastal Oceans) 20 year data set, monitoring dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, pH, and alkalinity of continental shelf water near to the Pacific coast upwelling engine, Heceta Bank. Maintained oceanographic sensors (Sea-Bird SBE 16+, SBE25, SBE 37, Sunburst Submersible Autonomous Moored Instrument for pH and CO2, Onset Dissolved Oxygen Sensors, Onset HOBO Tidbit temperature sensors); calibration, data recovery, QA/QC. Chief scientist on research cruises; planned research cruises, trained and selected ocean-going science staff. Performed in-lab analytical chemistries; titrations for dissolved oxygen, reduction experimentation for inorganic nitrogen and organic nitrogen, fluorescence for the determination of chlorophyll A, spectrophotometry for the determination of water alkalinity. Supervised undergraduate and graduate students working in the laboratory. Co-advised Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) grant students. Lab manager for the PISCO oceanography laboratory; responsible for lab safety, conducting experimentation, lab inventory, and purchasing.

I was responsible for scheduling and implementing scientific research focused on physiology and health of Arctic pinnipeds. I collected and analyzed metabolic, photogrammetric, and ultrasonometric data to characterize and define seasonal body condition and seasonal metabolism of spotted and ringed seals. I coordinated interagency Arctic research with The Alaska SeaLife Center, University of British Columbia, and The University of California Santa Cruz. I was responsible for training and supervising assistants and managing a summer fellowship.

Assisted senior researchers with planning and executing experimental trials. Prepared all supplies, equipment and area for medical procedures and assisted the medical team as required. Collected sea lion and fur seal blood samples and performed deuterium oxide injections. Trained visiting veterinary students in otariid phlebotomy. Maintained weekly animal health records, data files for individual experiments, and blood analysis results. Kept detailed anaesthetic procedure records, and a blood sample database.Collaborated with senior scientists and graduate students to ensure that studies were carried out in a timely and accurate manner. Maintained the metabolic chambers, operated the gas analysis equipment, video monitoring equipment, and collected and analyzed data during all metabolic trials as required by various research projects. Prepared timber sales as well as timber stand thinning, GPS mapping, and aerial photo orienteering. Lead in Rocky Mountain pine beetle control program and in part, collaborated with small team to identify beetle species, design and implement sampling procedures, assess invasive species impact, record data, and consult with private land owners. Assess spring runoff, by measuring snowpack, stream flow rates and turbidity, stream temperature, and stream depth.
