About Brandon Stiltner

Brandon is an Aerospace Engineer with over 14 years of experience in the areas of flight dynamics and control, modeling and simulation, testing, and analysis. He holds Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot License, is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA, a Certified Modeling and Simulation Professional, and a member of the AIAA Modeling and Simulation Technical Committee. He obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2007 and 2011, respectively. He is currently a Senior GNC Engineer at Draper, having worked on a variety of Projects spanning the Missile Defense Agency. Most recently, Brandon was the Control Lead for one of the NASA Human Lander System design teams. Notably, Brandon and his team developed the control system for the lander design, which was integrated into multiple flight simulators including NASA Ames Vertical Motion Simulator. During simulation tests, Brandon was fortunate to fly the simulation as co-pilot alongside former astronauts testing the control system’s handling qualities and performance.Prior to Draper, Brandon was part of the Flight Dynamics Team for the Space Launch System (SLS). The SLS is slated to return humans to the moon, and eventually take us to Mars. Tasks included analyzing the various separation events, ensuring that all separating hardware do not recontact the rocket. Prior to his current role, Brandon was the lead control engineer for the Reaction Control System on a CubeSat project known as the Near Earth Asteroid Scout. He developed a flight control system for the spacecraft's RCS, and also modeled the RCS hardware. Prior to NASA, Brandon led a team of four engineers during three successful wind-tunnel tests involving a ducted-fan propulsor. The propulsor was developed under the IARPA Great Horned Owl project to research quiet propulsion for unmanned aircraft. Using wind-tunnel data, he produced an aerodynamic model of the propulsor. On a similar project, he used wind-tunnel data to develop on-board, flight-control models for the RQ-16 T-Hawk. Finally, Brandon has been involved with the systematic development of unmanned aircraft from conceptual design through wind-tunnel and flight testing. Not only does he have a great understanding of the physics, but also a breadth of hands-on experience with aerospace hardware, electronics, and manufacturing techniques. He has built various prototype unmanned aircraft and wind-tunnel models using composite manufacturing, and is experienced with most common lab machinery and tools.

As a Senior Systems Analysis Engineer, I support NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the development of the SLS (Space Launch System) under the Jacobs ESSSA contract. The SLS is the new rocket currently under development by NASA that will send astronauts back to the Moon and could someday send astronauts to Mars. I get to work on many challenging and exciting tasks that touch various disciplines within the development of a launch vehicle. Most recently, I was part of a trade study team that investigated the Micro Meteoroid and Orbital Debris susceptibility of the upper stage of the SLS.

At AEgis, I investigate trajectories and dynamics of orbital and suborbital objects, and I use Matlab on a daily basis for analysis. For processing and viewing data, I've developed stand-alone Matlab apps for my own use and for other engineers within my group. These apps are used for analyzing and visualizing data, and automating steps within our process. Specifically, I have developed a number of tools for visualizing the 6 degree of freedom (6DOF) state data.

Wind Tunnel Testing: My role was the lead test engineer for a two-week wind tunnel experiment conducted at Virginia Tech’s stability wind tunnel. The wind tunnel test model was a ducted fan unit, which was tested at various fan speeds, wind speeds, and angles of attack. Leading up to the test, I was involved with the development of the test plan, instrumentation requirements, and to design the experiment. A high degree of instrumentation was used which measured forces, moments, power, wind tunnel and atmospheric properties, and acoustics. There were also multiple configurations tested during the experiment, and many problems occurred due to testing multiple configurations of the propulsor. During the experiment, I made ad-hoc changes to the test plan to accommodate unforeseen problems. Other responsibilities included developing the test schedule and developing test procedures. I also aided efforts of troubleshooting and reworking problems as they occurred during testing.Wind Tunnel Data Reduction: I also lead the effort of reducing wind tunnel data. This involved developing Matlab scripts to read, sort, and store the data in arrays for future use. I also presented results and findings to superiors and developed presentations for communications with the customer. I gained valuable experience with working with nonuniform data sets and using Matlab to read, sort, and analyze the data.UAV Flight Testing: I was the technical lead for a project involving UAV flight testing and autopilot development. My roles included remotely piloting the aircraft during flight testing and I worked with software developers concerning the autopilot and avionics. I lead the effort of instrumenting an RC aircraft with an off-the-shelf autopilot (ArduPilot) and successfully flew the aircraft via waypoint navigation. I also was involved with designing test plans and conducting testing (both ground and flight tests) leading up to a customer demo.

Micro Air Vehicle and Ducted Fan Vehicle Dynamics and Control: Helped vehicle design projects with an emphasis on vehicle dynamics and control. Specific tasks included modeling vehicle dynamics, vehicle control systems, vehicle control simulations, vehicle control surface design, and hardware-in-the-loop control testing. Other tasks included weight tracking and CG location, avionics component selection, and vehicle composite fabrication. I was involved with two ducted fan vehicle projects from design to prototype fabrication and flight testing. Specific tasks included control law development, speccing actuators, helping develop on-board flight controls, and flight testing the aircraft. I have deeply investigated the dynamics of ducted fan vehicles and have authored and presented research papers based on my findings.Piezo-electric Actuators and Macro Fiber Composites: Tasks included modeling and characterizing piezo-electric actuators using frequency response and Bode diagrams, PID control design, control simulations, and control testing of the actuators (hardware in the loop). These tasks also included digital signal data processing and data filtering using low and band pass filters. This project culminated in the fabrication of a UAV using a novel form of actuator based on these devices. I also piloted the UAV via radio control during initial flight tests in an indoor facility.Wind Tunnel Data Analysis: Involved in the analysis of wind tunnel data to produce flight control quality aerodynamic models. Wind tunnel models were subsequently used for flight control law development, flight control simulations, and on-board vehicle models for use with dynamic inversion flight controllers.Composite Layups and Fabrication: Performed wet layups of fiber-glass, carbon fiber, and Kevlar materials. Other fabrication tasks included building MAV scale vehicles using composites, hobby aircraft wood, and other off-the-shelf components.
