Not knowing what you want to do when you grow up is a great way to simultaneously make your parents very concerned with you leaving home for college but also to learn about what the working world has to offer. I graduated high school in 2018 and knew that I wanted to get away from home to metaphorically spread my wings and see what the world had to offer. I was working at a PetSmart in Lakewood Colorado and had previously worked at a Mcdonald's for two years. So I had about 20 years of experience in customer service... I moved to Grand Junction, Colorado to attend Colorado Mesa University (CMU) I started my journey as an undeclared undergraduate and was able to transfer my job from PetSmart in Lakewood to PetSmart in Junction. I stayed there for one more year while I tried to learn as much as I could, I started enjoying working with the animals at the store and eventually was a full-time staff member as a pet care associate, which is just a fancy name for, the guy who works with and knows about all the animals and cleans their habitats. Toward the end of my career at PetSmart, I formed a good relationship with the dog trainer at the time, Cynthia. I told her about my wanting to possibly do something in the healthcare world because I wanted to get away from the "typical" jobs I have had so far. She told me that I should get my CNA or certified nursing license and showed me how I could get the class for free by applying for a grant from the local workforce center. Trusting her, I took her advice. I am so glad that I did. I took the month-long class to get my CNA license and did 3 days of clinical hours at an assisted living facility, I fell in love with the work and learned so much about healthcare and all the different positions. I saw nurses, doctors, and all other facets of healthcare. I had found my major, I had found the reason I came to the middle of the desert in Grand Junction, and I had found a rewarding type of work that wasn't flipping burgers or cleaning animal poop. I found Nursing. I then got a job at an assisted living, and eventually at the main hospital in Grand Junction, I'm now in my last semester of nursing school and can't wait to work as a nurse! I am so glad I took the leap and left home and discovered for myself what I want to contribute back to the working world, I now aspire to work as an ED nurse and eventually work as a flight nurse.
