I have been around aircraft my entire United States Air Force career. I started out inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing C-130 cargo transport aircraft. These legacy aircraft don’t have all the computerized diagnostics of today’s aircraft, so I gained a very in-depth understanding of all the different systems of these heavy cargo planes, their landing gear and turbo prop engines. I started taking pilot lessons and flying as a hobby several years ago and I was instantly hooked. I have attained my commercial single engine pilot license and have complete my Certified Flight Instructor certification. I am now ready to turn in the wrench of the aircraft mechanic to the yoke of a commercial pilot. On the surface, the two careers may seem unrelated. However, there are quite a few skills that I have developed that I know will make me an excellent pilot. Here are a few examples:➡️ As a mechanic, I gained detailed knowledge of the intricate workings of an aircraft. This helps me as a pilot to understand the aircraft’s capabilities and limitations. As someone who has diagnosed malfunctions and isolated all types of faults on all different aircraft systems, I will be able to troubleshoot issues quickly and calmly, especially in emergency situations where decisive action and quick thinking are critical. ➡️ As a mechanic, I have a safety-focused mindset. I have worked around turboprop engines of the C-130 and jet engines of the F-35. This focus on adherence to strict safety regulations will ensure I protect the aircraft and the people and effectively handle any emergencies.➡️ Throughout my military career, I have learned how to effectively operate as part of a team. In the military, we don’t often get to choose those we work with or for and we have to learn how to coordinate with diverse divisions, personalities and communication styles. As I communicate with other pilots, passengers, ground crew members or air traffic control personnel, I am confident that my teamwork and adaptable communication skills will be an asset. As I prepare to bring my USAF career to a close after October 2024, I am confident that my combination of pilot training, technical expertise and experience will help me to be very effective as a pilot.
