I was part of a team of attorneys that led a concerted effort to stem homelessness and displacement in Boston during the foreclosure crisis. My role involved educating homeowners and tenants facing foreclosure and/or eviction. I handled all publicity and outreach campaigns that raised awareness to reach families that faced the imminent threat of foreclosure and eviction due to predatory lending. In support of this effort I produced the first-of-its-kind Know Your Rights video series on Foreclosure and Eviction for residents of Massachusetts. While employed at HLS I co-founded the People's Law School, a free legal workshop that educates community members around everyday legal issues. Their mission is to effect systematic change by fighting for racial, social, and economic justice through movement building. I served as the in-house Communications Manager providing media strategy. I was responsible for developing and executing publicity campaigns to generate media coverage for demonstrations against the predatory lending practices of Wall St. Banks, exposing the damaging effects of foreclosures and evictions. The aim was to pressure Wall St. Banks and Fannie Mae to change policy around principle reduction in order to prevent displacement and neighborhood despair. This was all in effort to keep families in their homes in order to maintain and build sustainable communities. By integrating social media strategies with traditional media outreach, I successfully garnered 47 media mentions over the course of one year; a major accomplishment for a community non-profit. Placements included news stories in the Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Hoffington Post, MarketWatch of the Wall St. Journal, Boston Business Journal, as well as a host of other local television, radio and print publications.
