Public Policy InternOxnard Mayor Pro Tem, Carmen Ramirez, Esq. May 2019 - Aug 2019Gained extensive personal development in, inspiration for, and insight on Civic Leadership through direct mentorship from one of Oxnard’s most beloved and influential public servants, Carmen Ramirez, Esq (d. 2023), who later became the first Latina Chair of—let alone the first Latina elected to—the Ventura County Board of Supervisors.Acquired hands-on experience and nuanced understanding of the intersections between local and state governance by attending and reporting on meetings held by bodies such as the City of Oxnard, County of Ventura, California Coastal Commission, and California Public Utilities Commission.Explored the impact of key external stakeholders on community and policy initiatives by attending and briefing on workshops & meetings organized by groups such as the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce, Oxnard Performing Arts Center, Southern California Association of Governments, and Ventura County Bar Association. Major topics included housing, public health, immigration, water, transportation, sustainability, arts/culture, and budgeting/financing.Deepened my understanding of Oxnard social issues by researching and reporting on key historical influences, including its complex history with segregation, water systems, houselessness, and immigration. This was further enriched by engaging with the resources in their historical contexts.Assisted the Mayor Pro Tem in reviewing and assessing the city budget proposal focused on closing a $9.2 million budget gap—which threatened to close the low-income serving library and boxing gym in La Colonia, a fire station, and many other city services.Culminated my internship amidst a nitrate contamination crisis impacting 1,200 El Rio residents by conducting research into the City of Oxnard’s water infrastructure and complex network of water mutuals with special regard to changing environmental and legal circumstances.
