I have a diverse set of skills and interests, but the primary focus of my professional life is conducting research. My background is in qualitative research, but I have recently transitioned to a position focused on data science. In this newly created position, my primary functions will be to support data science projects across BLS's survey offices and conduct research aimed at improving BLS workflows and products. I will also coordinate work being done across offices, help establish technical infrastructure to improve data science workflows, educate BLS staff about data science skills and techniques by leading a data science training program and a user group, and manage intern programs.If all that sounds abstract, here are several concrete projects I've worked on: design of interactive dashboards using R Shiny for monitoring the data collection progress, extraction and coding of text from health insurance PDF forms using machine learning, clustering of emails sent to a help desk to find common themes, and constructing analyzable datasets from thousands of survey paradata files. I am in my fourth year coordinating a summer internship program for technologists interested in public service. I also helped establish a hosted instance of GitLab at BLS for code sharing/collaboration which has now become the agency standard for production version control.
