I completed several research projects for Virginia Clean Cities during my internship. I compared Virginia’s hydraulic fracturing regulations to states with greater amounts of shale gas production and wrote a report on policy recommendations for the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy. I also performed of geographic analysis of Virginia’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure to estimate EV range within the state and analyze interstate accessibility. In the summer of 2014 I had the opportunity to assist in an initiative to develop Virginia’s electric vehicle market. We partnered with Nissan USA and successfully advanced 13 CHAdeMO standard charging stations in targeted areas across Virginia.

During the 2012-2013 academic year I helped to design and teach a general education course on the energy challenge. I worked with a team of students to develop the course content and teach it to a class of university students. We covered the basics of thermodynamics, national and international energy demand, global climate change, conventional energy sources, renewables, energy efficiency, and energy economics and policy. We emphasized the knowledge necessary for students to make informed decisions about their own energy consumption and understand large scale energy issues that they may view in the news. As a team we were responsible for preparing lectures, presenting them to the team, teaching in the classroom, and preparing and grading homework.
