My education career began as an elementary teacher. After five years in the classroom, my heart was pulled to stay home with my children. When I stepped back into education, I landed a job working with state literacy grants which evolved into over a decade leading state literacy initiatives at the Michigan Department of Education. In the last year of my work at the department, I was able to advocate for the need to create, hire, and nurture a literacy team to better support Michigan educators. During my time leading education efforts in the state, I leaned heavily on my networks with other state leaders to grapple with the decisions and barriers connected to federal and state literacy legislation. In these networks, we explored literacy research, learned from one another, and shared resources. My connection with other state leaders helped improve the support from the department to local school leaders. Connecting people and ideas in the literacy space became my super-power and led me to Lexia. As an Education Department Relations Manager, I dig into the literacy funding and policy of each state. I find ways to connect state leaders grappling with leading state literacy initiatives. Lexia has decades of experience supporting states with their literacy initiatives.
