Crosscut

Seattle, Washington, United States

At Crosscut, I set the editorial tone for arts and culture coverage. I manage and edit staff writers, freelancers and fellows with a keen eye toward surfacing untold stories and illuminating the issues artists face in this cultural and economic moment. For the past two years, I have project managed and edited the expansive Black Arts Legacies project, which showcases the long history and continuing impact of Black artists in Seattle. The connective tissue of Crosscut’s arts coverage is my ArtSEA newsletter, a weekly column (with 13,000+ subscribers) about the wide diversity of cultural goings-on in the Pacific Northwest.

For this appointment I chose to document the history and future of the Austin Universal Air Chest pipe organ that sat dormant behind the main stage at Town Hall. During the course of my residency, I presented two evening events at Town Hall Seattle: on November 7, a work-in-progress discussion of vestigial organs of all kinds; and on December 7, my final "findings," which featured a multi-media presentation about the history of pipe organs, both in Seattle and worldwide, plus a live music interlude I created using sections of the defunct organ at Town Hall.
