About Brayden Sutton

I am a UCLA graduate with a B.S. in Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution currently working as a fisheries biologist. I have a great respect for the scientific method and am passionate about research and education in my field. I completed three undergraduate research projects addressing biodiversity, behavioral ecology, and marine ecology, giving me experience with laboratory and field work, literature synthesis, and data analysis. I am pursuing opportunities to build on this experience, expand my breadth of knowledge, and continue learning about ecology with a multidisciplinary approach. My main career goal is to strengthen the scientific community with education, inspiration, and inclusivity, and I am looking for work and educational opportunities that will enable me to do so.

Brayden Sutton Work Experience Details
  • Alaskan Observers, Inc.
    Fisheries Biologist
Alaskan Observers, Inc. Jan 2023 - Present
    Unalaska, Alaska, United States
I collect biological data and sample for species composition for the conservation and management of NOAA Fisheries. This includes monitoring total catch and interactions with protected bird and marine mammal species for groundfish and halibut fisheries in the Bering Sea. I regularly use dichotomous keys and field guides for the identification of 161 fish species, 20 crab species, 72 bird species, and 29 marine mammal species. For each boat haul or plant offload, I create a statistical sample design to determine the best method and timing to collect my samples. I also monitor crew compliance with fishing regulations of NOAA Fisheries.

    Bodega Bay, California, United States
For 3.5 weeks I performed lab and field work at the UC Davis Bodega-Marine Laboratory for two undergraduate research projects. I worked alongside Dr. Tonya Kane and a group of 2 other undergrads on a two-pronged marine ecology project. One half of the research focused on the effects that different components of turbidity have on algae growth, while the other half investigated how local differences in water movement affect algae growth. I also worked with Dr. Brenda Larison and 3 other undergrads on a marine behavior project that observed the effects of temperature on the antipredator behavior of three-spined sticklebacks. We analyzed our data using RStudio, and presented our results to the UCLA Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior.
  • University Of California, Los Angeles
Biodiversity Assessment Of The Natural Reserve System (Banrs)
University Of California, Los Angeles Jan 2022 - Apr 2022

I worked with Dr. Gary Bucciarelli, Dr. Alison Lipman, and a group of 4 other undergrads to design a comprehensive biodiversity assessment for the University of California Natural Reserve System. We proposed 3 assessment protocols for the University of California Office of the President organized by ecological community comprehension and available funding. In preparation, we carried out extensive literature searches investigating active and passive survey methods as well as community science and aggregator databases. Additionally we held over 400 minutes of interviews with reserve directors to gain a case-by-case understanding of each reserve's needs.
