Breda Joy works as a journalist with Kerry’s Eye newspaper and, in her free time, writes fiction and poetry. She holds a M Phil in Creative Writing from Trinity College Dublin. Her latest book, 'Hidden Kerry, The Keys to the Kingdom', was published by Mercier Press of Cork in October, 2014, and was one of the top-sellers in Kerry that Christmas. She delivered a lecture, based on the book, at the Killarney National Park Autumn Lecture Series. A second book, 'The Book of Great Kerry Quotes' is due out from Mercier later this year. One of her short stories was shortlisted for the Francis MacManus Short Story Award in 2011. She also made the long list of the Fish Short Story competition the same year. She has had poetry published in The Stony Thursday Book, Icarus and the Cork Literary Review. In 2012, she was one of the national winners of the inaugural Trócaire/Poetry Ireland Poetry Award. In December, 2011, she joined the voluntary group, Be Aware Prevent Suicide, as Public Relations Officer. She has secured publicity for its education/awareness events on RTE's Morning Ireland radio show, on the Six-One News and in the national and regional print media, as well as on radio.In 2014, she strained as a literacy tutor with Kerry Education and Training Board and is currently tutoring a student. In 2015, she qualified for a week-long writing residency at the Tin Jug Studio in Birr, County Offaly, and is looking forward to progressing another creative writing project there in July.
