Schrijven van onderzoeksrapport metaanbevelingen voor de Faculteit van de Kunsten. Titel rapport: ‘Sorry, je begrijpt mijnhaar gewoon niet’. Leiding geven aan groepsgesprekken over diversiteit met studenten en docenten.

Disengaging Culturalism: Artistic Strategies of Young Muslims in the Netherlands.This ethnographic study examines how young Muslims in the Netherlands engage in artistic strategies that disengage from the culturalist logic of the Dutch dominant integration discourse. It investigates artistic production of young Muslims in the Netherlands as an exit strategy from the dominant discourse and as a process of authorship that yields emerging subjectivities. This study makes clear however, that not all art that seeks to opt out of the dominant discourse is able to do so. The strategy of exit is susceptible to being drawn back into the dominant discourse in attempts to be made legible within its parameters. When artworks made by young Muslims cannot be incorporated within the dominant discourse, they are often simply ignored or rejected by artistic institutions. The subjectivities of Muslims that are generated in exit strategies resist the form of legibility that is demanded from the dominant discourse. They do not fit within a binary logic that posits the religious against the secular, the allochtoon against the autochtoon, the modern against the backward, etc. One of the goals of this study is to strengthen the often precarious position of these liminoid subjectivities by making them more visible, more legitimate and more ordinary within the social scientific domain. By making visible what artistic strategies young Muslims in the Netherlands practice in an attempt to opt out of the dominant discourse, this study emphasizes the other stories and images that speak about their everyday lives.Key words: Muslims in Europe, culturalisation, integration debate, artistic production, subjectivity, power.
