In my 34 years of working in the maritime industry, I have learnt a lot about the key elements that make a port successful. I really enjoy sharing that knowledge and still enjoy learning from others and I feel like a proud Rotterdammer when talking about my port city.In 2003 I was the first female expatriate from my company to the Middle East. My mission then was to set up the first Joint Venture of the Port of Rotterdam Authority in Oman. We started from scratch, worked together with the Omani government and many companies. The port of Sohar is now one of the largest and fastest growing ports in that region. I have been involved in coordinating the continued co-operation on Sohar Port and Freezone for fifteen years. The experience of setting up an entirely new port, inspired me to share knowledge about port development and port management. This made me initiate a training program for port professionals, the port management program. I still contribute to port management & executive leadership programs in Rotterdam and abroad and work together with port companies, universities and vocational training institutes for these.Based on my interest in learning processes, and insights gained from this, I co-developed the digital game Port Constructor. The aim for this game was to combine several perspectives on port development and port management while achieving a balanced approach for people, planet and profit. Evaluations have shown that the digital Game Port Constructor is a challenging & highly inspiring part of this program, as the game is based on both practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of port developers, educators and scientists.I like to take the initiative for innovative concepts. For this reason I was selected to participate in an innovation program inside Port of Rotterdam, called Game Changers. Our team won the challenge and has contributed successfully to a new software solution that is now part of a real live pilot for efficient container logistics.
