Researcher / Entomologist - Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Project

Papua New Guinea Oil Pal Research Association Inc.

Dami Research Station, Kimbe, West New Britain, Papua New Guinea

The Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB), Oryctes rhinoceros L., is a major pest of coconut and oil palm in the Asia-Pacific region. The beetle is endemic to the tropical regions of South East Asia from where it has spread with invasions of palm producing areas. In the 1970-80s the invasive populations were brought under control by the release of the biocontrol agent Oryctes rhinoceros nudivirus (OrNV) and no further significant outbreaks were reported for the next 40 years. In 2007, a new outbreak of CRB was reported in Guam, where the beetles caused extensive and significant damage. Genetic analysis revealed that the outbreak was caused by a new variant of CRB, referred to as CRB-G because it is a different biotype that is resistant to the natural biocontrol virus. Populations of this highly destructive CRB-G population have since been discovered in Papua New Guinea (PNG; Port Moresby), Hawaii, Solomon Islands, Palau, Philippines and Indonesia. The spread of CRB poses a major economic and food security threat to PNG and other Pacific islands. CRB-G and the indigenous CRB (or CRB-P) are morphologically identical and can only be distinguished by DNA analysis. My main duties involve developing a map of the presence of the two biotypes, CRB-P and CRB-G in PNG and across the Pacific. My responsibilities include capture and collection of CRB tissue samples and identifying the biotypes via genetic profiling and detecting OrNV infection. Confirming the presence of the CRB biotypes and the incidence of OrNV infection is critically important to determine the appropriate biocontrol agent and the sanitation methods that can be implemented to limit the spread and impact of CRB. Additionally, I am responsible for establishing a laboratory based CRB mass rearing program in order to research the best, most cost effective and convenient biological control options for Integrated Pest Management of this CRB pest.
