Working primarily with indigenous enterprises, my role focuses on supporting achievement of business sustainability for indigenous corporations so they can deliver emerging resource development requirements and achieve pre-qualification in the major projects sector in terms of HSE and social/community management systems, standards and performance. In addition I advise Indigenous clients on the integration of sustainability approaches into business practices, including socioeconomic and environmental impact assessment and management. My key foci are HSE, system, standards and performance in line with emerging resource development requirements, and long-term business sustainability. I advise clients on the integration of strategic sustainability approaches into business practices. This includes socioeconomic and environmental impact assessment, mitigation and management. Most notably I have supported native title groups in the delivery of long-term sustainability for traditional owner groups. Integral to this achievement is my ability to support these groups to determine viable business opportunities which maximise funds and deliver long-term community benefits.In addition I designed and implemented a supply chain development program for indigenous businesses in the Surat Basin.Key to my success in this role is my skill in challenging business processes to ensure sustainability and value-add proposition of opportunities. This includes examining and proposing strategies to drive cost-effectiveness, energy and resource efficiency, incorporation of HSE, and achievement of social expectations.In addition I have developed a systematic approach to identify and analyse risks and opportunities. This is underpinned by strategies aimed at capturing the associated value, to inform implementation of robust business processes and create measurable financial value.

Within this role I worked broadly across the organisation to examine the expectations of the business, identify key risks, and challenge existing business processes and approaches. This subsequently informed and supported development of a longer term sustainable development strategy into project design and execution. Key to the relevance of this strategy was balancing the expectations of stakeholders against business profitability and HSE performance improvement objectives. Most notably within this role I spearheaded the design and implementation of a formal materiality process to examine stakeholder issues and expectations. Through risk, cost and return-on-investment analysis, mid- and long-term priority results were determined. This has provided a robust basis upon which to pinpoint improvements with greatest potential to influence stakeholder perception and support Arrow’s social licence. In addition I developed a financial valuation model, to better enable the quantification of costs and financial risks associated with sustainable development, HSE and community programs. Subsequently defining and translating the return-on-investment in terms that could be quantified by leaders across the organisation, this model drove the development of robust strategic planning. Skilled in facilitating collaboration through the management of multidisciplinary, multifunctional groups, I support innovation and the integration of sustainability in decision-making, planning and project execution.Notably this has included developing a company-wide sustainable development strategy in consultation with a broad range of stakeholders. The strategy encompasses monitoring and reporting of strategy implementation internally and externally. Employed primarily with Rio Tinto Alcan businesses, I provided the key point of advice and project management support on the Rio Tinto global Safety Leadership Development Program. In addition I subsequently supported a global HSC and Community Skills Development for Leaders Program. These initiatives primarily focused on translating standard operating requirements to enable communication across all disciplines, at all levels within Rio Tinto business globally. Leading a team of HSEC learning consultants I delivered an integrated learning program, including eLearning and campus components in accordance with procurement practices and HSEQ MS standards. In addition I engaged global internal/external stakeholders on HSEC skills requirements. This assisted in ensuring consistency and compatibility with business solution, HR, learning and performance management systems.Spearheading the Skills for Zero Harm Program (SZHP) globally for Rio Tinto, I played a key role in developing the HSEC competency framework and content for the Rio Tinto’s HSEC Academy. This included delivering training material for SZHP champions globally, to enable regional delivery and successful implementation across product groupsCollectively these initiatives enabled multidisciplinary content development and instructional design of e-learning/campus modules. This subsequently supported improvements to HSEC/sustainable development leadership skills of Rio Tinto leaders, globally.To underpin these endeavours I developed and supported a multi-tiered engagement model to ensure the relevance of learning to operational site requirements. This included tracking steering committee/workgroup proceedings and follow-up actions.

Employed on a part-time project basis, within this role I was tasked with facilitating a range of projects aimed at systematically building sustainability across the business. In addition I supported the development of organisational awareness of sustainability practices and objectives. This was achieved through a number of projects.Most notably I facilitated a multi-stakeholder forum to create a sustainable development strategy focus for Rio Tinto Alcan. This included the coordination of reporting and communications processes around sustainable development for Australia, Wales and New Zealand operations.In addition I consulted broadly on strategy, content and approach to facilitate the development of a strategic map for a sustainable development program, implemented globally. In addition I developed policy guidance and procedures for due diligence. This included socioeconomic impact assessment, and analysis of acquisitions and mergers.Refining a risk-based assessment process and tools I confirmed that the identification and management of sustainable development issues effectively drove business value. This included ensuring that costs and benefits encompassed both cash flows and the full range of other impacts such as HSE, economic and social.

Within this role I was responsible for the development and coordination of the long-term business approach to sustainable development policy and programs, ensuring consistency with global policies. This included developing and embedding sustainable development tools as well as incorporation of sustainable development issues/opportunities into business planning.Most notably I negotiated socio-economic and environmental agreements with Aboriginal communities, non-government organisations and levels of government. My key focus was on ensuring a risk-based approach with a balance between business objectives and stakeholder expectations.In addition I coordinated company activities to ensure stakeholder commitments both voluntary and legislative, were tracked and delivered. I also coordinated all regulatory and voluntary reporting requirements internally and externally. In addition represented the business on several national and territorial, multiagency committees and coordinating bodies.

The key focus of this role was ensuring DDMI followed the regulatory requirements for project approvals. This included Canadian environmental and Socio-economic legislation, The Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, and Environmental and Water Legislation.This was a highly varied role encompassing exploration, business development approvals, and regulatory approvals. It also included construction and commissioning into operations to identify business/project design and development implications as well as requirements from all sources.Most notably within this role I established a legislative tracking process to ensure DDMI satisfied regulatory and stakeholder requirements. I also developed the community consultation/engagement program and developed a stakeholder database which tracked issues through to closure. In addition I coordinated the development and deployment of the original ISO 14001 health, safety, and environmental management system for DDMI.

Managing a large team of environmental and social scientists, this role saw me responsible for coordinating the discharge of federal government responsibilities under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (1994). Most notably within this role I performed as the Chair of the Regional Social/Environmental Review Committee. This included responsivity for completing the review of potential environmental and socio-economic effects associated with proposed major development projects in the North.In addition I developed processes to guarantee community/stakeholder input into the federal public review processes. I also coordinated federal input into the emerging resource management legislation in the Northwest Territories for federal departments, arising from land claims.
