As Director of Ramblers Scotland I have worked across a number of sectors and in particular physical activity, outdoor access, active travel and landscape conservation. I have taken a particular interest in how we can better serve excluded groups, with a particular focus on ethnic minorities communities and lower SIMD neighbourhoods. Activities I have helped lead or support have included:Developing a new relationship with Scottish Government partners to deliver a social media video campaign to promote responsible access to less experienced teenagers and young adults from diverse backgrounds, which reach over 1m views and 150,000 completions on TikTok and Snapchat in 2023Helping secure the funding to extend our award-winning Out There Award for young adults and refocusing the programme targets to specifically target excluded groups, helping more people from more backgrounds enjoy the outdoors.Building strong relationship with partners across the voluntary and statutory sector that helped increase our influence and opened up new funding opportunities.Prior to taking up my current role, I was a strategic communications consultant working with clients in Scotland and England. Before moving to Scotland with my family in 2016, I was Director of Communications for the Disasters Emergency Committee in London, where I helped the UK's largest NGOs raise over half a billion pounds for overseas emergencies and ensured we were accountable to the public for how this money was spent. I had overall responsibility for all external communications including digital communications, public affairs, publications, events, celebrity liaison and media relations.Specialities: Crisis communicationsDigital transformationCommunications reviews and strategiesUK - Scottish intra-organisational relationshipsAdvocacy and marketing communicationsChange management Physical activity, Outdoor recreation and active travelInternational aid and developmentEnvironmental and scientific communications

I manage the Ramblers Scotland staff team and work closely with our thousands of members and volunteers to oversee all Ramblers activities north of the border. I am also a member of the Senior Management Team of Ramblers GB.In my time at the Ramblers Scotland I have:Ensured stability for the organisation during the transition to my leadership, despite half the staff facing uncertainty about the funding of their posts.Raised the profile of Ramblers Scotland through major broadcast interviews, video making & social media activity - often having to deftly judge my tone and approach on potentially contentious issues.Rapidly developed a strong relationship with other Ramblers GB Senior Management Team members & the Convenor of Ramblers Scotland; enabling me to secure resources, deliver policy changes and adjust our strategic direction. Helped shifted campaign strategy to include a focus on paths because of evidence non-members found this engaging & that it will help get people walking.Ensured government funding for a walk leader training scheme despite significant obstacles. Made sure the scheme was a model of cross-nation collaboration & that it was formally recognised as a GB-wide pilot based in Scotland. Led senior staff & the board through an evidence-based decision process to refuse £250,000 for a walking festival because costs would have outweighed benefits. Show less -
