Hi , I am a registered mental health nurse who qualified in 2017. I began my journey at Fromeside hospital, secure forensics, in Bristol where I worked on the acute admissions ward. I decided I missed my home land and returned to work at Llanarth court, secure forensics ,where I had worked as a HCW some 13 yrs prior. Over my 4 years at Llanarth I got to experience working on medium secure female ward, medium secure personality disorder ward, low secure learning disability ward and I was a charge nurse on a low secure rehab ward. Key skills and experience learnt from secure services were care planning, risk assessments (WARRN), crisis management, managing challenging behaviours effectively and leading a team.I then decided I would like to try the community way of life and got a job as a band 6 CPN in Cardiff and Vale NHS for older adults. This was an integrated role and involved a lot of social worker related tasks such as assessing mental capacity, acting in best interests and working within least restrictive practice. As a CPN within this team we would also commission packages of care and find appropriate placements for people whose care and support needs could not be met in the community. Being a lone worker meant having a certain amount of autonomy over your case load, managing this is a skill in itself . From point of referral to discharge from the service, I would ensure a person's care and support needs were effectively assessed and interventions/referrals made to ensure that the person would have the best chance of improving their overall well-being. This was always done in a collaborative manner with individuals and family members. Sometimes there would be external work to be carried out at the request of the court of protection.I went on to work in a nursing home for 8 months as a clinical lead following my departure from Cardiff and Vale . I now find myself starting a role close to my heart as a crisis home treatment practitioner for Cwm Taff health board
