During my professional career I have been actively involved in changing how farmers farm. I have worked in extension, research and education as well as having run successful commercial businesses supplying technology and a broadacre grain growing farm.During the 80-90s it was Notill and spraying technology working with farmer groups like Wimmera Conservation Farming Association and later supporting VicNoTill. Researching sprayer technology at Cranfield in UK winning John Hall prize for research into the atomisation of spray. Lectured in engineering at Longerenong College for 12 years.Through the late 90s and 00s it was GPS technology. Firstly introducing yield monitoring/mapping technology, then visual guidance and eventually auto steering technologies. Co-founded a company GPS-Ag that was market leading supplier of RTK steering until the tractor OEMs took control. Through the 10s to present I’ve been farming running CTF Notill grain growing operation utilising technologies such as WeedIt and Seed Terminator. I developed a novel broadacre winter irrigated farm. The irrigation systems spread a small amount of water over a large area in a timely and economically fashion. Knowing that the difference between a poor season and great one is only a few mm of rain. So ever year is a great year.In 2008 I introduced WeedIt technology in Australia. This technology has now become an essential part of grain growing in many areas of Australia, where economical control of summer weeds to conserve moisture for the following crop is essential. WeedIt detects weeds so pesticides can just be applied to the weed typically giving chemical savings of 90%. Great for the farmer, the environment and the consumer! My focus now is a war on weeds as this is looming as a major threat. The WeedIt technology is a major part of this focus as is the harvest mill technology Seed Terminator.
