Graduate Research Assistant
As a researcher, I worked independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional (University of Pittsburgh, University of Missouri, Columbia University Medical Center, Columbia University) team to develop 3D tissue engineering based technologies for cartilage repair. As a result of my research, my dissertation investigated on the (1) characterization, (2) optimization, and (3) implementation of a complete strategy for tissue engineered cartilage repair.(1) Characterized the tensile and compressive mechanical properties of tissue engineered cartilage.(2) Developed methodology for mapping the surface of the canine knee and creating an anatomical mold for the tissue engineering of an entire articular surface.(3) Demonstrated the ability to cultivate tissue growth and defend against cytokine insult via biodegradable microsphere delivery dexamethasone. This work led to the successful preparation and funding of 2 grant proposals worth nearly ~$2.7 million. In this work, I authored a book chapter on the use of the natural biomaterial, agarose, in biological applications. I trained and mentored numerous students in the laboratory, including undergraduate and Masters-level students, helping them to adapt to unexpected results and communicate their conclusions effectively to an informed audience. I worked with and trained orthopaedic surgical residents in laboratory work, therein validating an enzymatic model of biochemical degradation in post traumatic osteoarthritis.Further, I was responsible for lab maintenance including custom electronics, laboratory equipment, and machinery. I designed and fabricated biological tissue mechanical evaluation systems, and worked with industry collaborators to evaluate the potential for their products to be used in cartilage tissue engineering applications.
Ctv Senior Fellow - Marketing
Columbia Technology Ventures (CTV) is the technology transfer office of Columbia University. Our core objective is to facilitate and expedite the movement of inventions from academic research to outside organizations for the benefit of society. Each year, CTV manages nearly 400 invention disclosures from faculty, 100 license deals and 15 new start-ups. CTV currently has over 1200 patent assets available for licensing across research fields such as biology, information technology, clean technology, medical devices, nanotechnology, and materials science.Critical to the success of technology transfer at Columbia University is the CTV Fellows program. In the early stages of technology transfer, Fellows complete initial assessments of the potential commercial applications of technologies invented by Columbia University faculty and review patent literature that may anticipate these technologies. At later stages, Fellows draft non-confidential summaries of technologies, their applications, and their advantages for use in various CTV marketing channels. As a part of this marketing effort, Fellows identify companies that may be interested in Columbia technologies and prepare the language used to attract these companies as potential licensees. As a CTV Fellow, I completed assignments including: the review of background intellectual property over a range of foci, including physical sciences, healthcare, and clean energy, estimating the potential market size and competition for inventions, and drafting marketing documents directed to business development offices. As CTV Senior Fellow of Marketing, I was responsible for CTV Fellow generated marketing campaigns. From ensuring the quality of the work our team produces to launching and tracking these campaigns, I aim to connect licensing officers with their counterparts at innovative companies looking to form academic partnerships and harness the capacity of a major research university.
Undergraduate Researcher
As an undergraduate researcher, I worked extensively under assistant professor Dr. John D. DesJardins to better quantify the motion associated with total knee replacements. In becoming familiar with relevant medical terminology and the use of a 4-Station Knee Wear Testing Simulator, I, with the help of a locomotion effort from Clemson’s Department of Biology, developed methodology and analysis for total knee replacement wear testing simulation kinematic measurements using high-speed video systems and MATLAB software. I further used this system, in conjunction with an Italian collaborator, to investigate the impact of various ligamentous configurations on the performance of bi-unicondylar knee replacements. On a parallel project, I worked alongside a professor within the department of psychology to apply range of motion measurement devices (i.e. electrogoniometers) to activities of daily living and limited mobility associated with aging and rehabilitation. This system was also to investigate patients with limited cervical range of motion to determine the impact of age on diminishing peripheral vision during driving.
