Hello! My name is Brendan and I run The Ideas Studio. We specialise in video explainers and other new digital video formats. As a filmmaker I have made numerous films for the BBC, The New York Times and other publishers. I'm the creator of the series Things Not to Say for BBC Three which has won several awards and been watched many millions of times on Facebook and YouTube. Before focusing on online, I was a current affairs television producer, working as the series producer on BBC Question Time and a number of other high-profile political television programmes.I also help organisations make better video through teaching and consulting. In recent years, I have helped newspapers (The New York Times), broadcasters (including BBC, RTBF, WDR, DW, SRF and ORF) and campaign groups (38 Degrees) and worked with hundreds of journalists and filmmakers everywhere from Munich to Tunisia. You can contact me at brendan@the-ideas-studio.com

Series Producer, Bbc Free SpeechMentorn Media Feb 2014 - May 2015• Relaunched the show with a new set, music and branding and an editorially ambitious agenda which included a controversial debate on being gay and Muslim in a mosque; a programme inside a mental health hospital with an audience entirely made up of those with a mental health problem; and four election shows featuring leaders of the main political parties. We also talked about trusting the police in Broadwater Farm, Tottenham; whether prison works in a courthouse in Nottingham; and immigration in Thanet, Nigel Farage's target seat.• Brought social media in-house for the first time and made it key to the editorial shape of the programme through the Choose Our Questions page (allowing the audience at home got to submit and vote on what a programme talks about). We also produced daily online graphics, films, and other content just for the online audience. As well as producing a number of 'breakout' hits (graphics or films reaching audiences of millions) these changes have meant we have tripled our Facebook likes and Twitter follows in a year (just 14 hours of broadcast) and seen huge increases in reach and engagement. • We have punched above our weight to bring in big panellists from high-level politicians (Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg, Alastair Campbell - in total 5 party leaders) to comedy talent like Russell Kane• Commissioned numerous short films from a variety of UK film-makers. Gained access to a range of extraordinary contributors, from a young British Israeli army soldier to a Britain's first Muslim drag queen.• Led a team to produce a series of light-hearted but rigorous 'explainer' videos on the main UK political parties. The videos got picked up within the BBC and put on the Newsbeat website and other outlets -
Series Producer, Bbc Question TimeMentorn Aug 2012 - Jun 2014• David Dimbleby’s producer – role including briefing him during transmission• Managed a small team to produce top quality briefings• Excellent Westminster contacts after three years being based there, working with most of the UK's front-bench politicians.• Outputted the programme on a number of occasions when the editor was away, including the Swansea programme, directly after the publication of the Leveson report.• Good contacts with the numerous well known people that joined us on the panel (Hugh Grant, Steve Coogan, Russell Brand, Kirstie Allsopp, John Lydon, Joey Barton, Piers Morgan, David Starkey)• Part of the team that turned around at short notice a programme in South Africa in the wake of Nelson Mandela's death. -
