About Brenna Gracely
There are major challenges facing the widespread use of renewable energy, one of which is the challenge of energy storage. The research/industry I am currently focused on is developing and improving stationary energy storage systems made from repurposed electric vehicle batteries. I am passionate about this endeavor because it alleviates two problems: battery waste and energy storage. My academic focus is on maintaining the Green Technology Lab’s fully operational BESS made from second-life EV batteries that provides power to a winery on campus. I am currently testing the batteries that were in the storage system for the last couple of years to explore the nature of their degradation and the challenges posed by the capacity recovery effect on estimating their SOH.I am also the Green Transportation Lab’s manager and machinist. I spend as much time as possible in the machine shop improving my hands-on skills. I am learning TIG, MIG, and OAW. I am consistently learning lathe and mill techniques and am being trained as a CNC mill operator. I am learning CAM and CNC machining to gain competency in programming and machining parts. The majority of my interest lies in improving manufacturing processes and bridging the communication gap between engineers and machinists. During my time as an M.S. student, I will remain involved with avenues that make machining and hands-on skills more accessible to all students. One major avenue is working each year as a TA for the Biological & Agricultural Engineering senior design class, which is a year-long class that guides students through the entire design process (concept/proposal to fabricated prototype). I am passionate about continuing to develop my hands-on skills, especially to help others develop theirs.

Mechanical Engineer
I fabricate prototypes/parts and assist with the manufacturing process starting with raw materials. This involves CAD, cutting/prepping raw materials, MIG welding, creating technical drawings with tolerances, and communicating with fabricators as needed. I inform the lead engineers about the shortcomings in the mechanical design to improve it and reduce manufacturing costs. I also fabricate manufacturing jigs as needed.
Graduate Student Researcher
Lab: Green Technology LabGeneral activities: Running SOH tests on second-life Nissan Leaf batteries using Arbin and Bitrode test stations to measure degradation. Studying SOH estimation techniques and BESS control methods. Fabricating parts as needed for all of our research operations. Disassembling and assembling battery packs for our BESS. Safety manager of lab. Most recent project: Improving the design of a high-throughput battery electrolyte tester for an external company. The main goals of the project were to reduce EMI and to improve the mechanical design, all with the aim of improving measurement accuracy and decreasing measurement variability between testing channels. This involved thoroughly analyzing the electrical and mechanical design, re-wiring the switch-box system with coaxial cable and creating a Faraday cage to reduce EMI, iteratively improving the sealing mechanism to contain the electrolyte solution during testing, iterative modeling in SolidWorks, machining parts (Teflon and stainless steel) with a manual lathe and CNC mill, and testing each design iteration to see how measurement results improved. My improvements achieved a 2-5% error and significantly reduced channel-to-channel variability; the error in the original design was around 20%. This serves as relevant experience for R&D engineering.
Teaching Assistant
Over the last few years, I helped develop a project for the first quarter of this class in which each student fabricates a desk lamp from raw materials. Through the lamp project, they develop competency with bandsaws, drill presses, belt sanders, spot welders, creating engineering drawings, and more. In the two remaining quarters of the class, I guide them through the completion of their design projects. This includes guidance in mechanical design, communicating with machine shop staff, team management, writing technical reports, and professionalism.
Hands-On Skills Education Lead
Organized and led workshops that taught hands-on skills to club members. Provided mentorship to club members and leaders.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Green Technology Lab - Battery Lab at University of California, Davishttps://research.engineering.ucdavis.edu/greentech/The lab is focused on the development of energy storage using recycled electric vehicle batteries. My contributions: Conducted literature review/research on thermal runaway in Li-ion batteries and fire management techniques. Acquired technical information for tools/parts and found miscellaneous statistical data as needed. Received on-the-job training to monitor a functioning 1MW energy storage system. Executed daily tests using an Arbin battery test station on over 100 Nissan Leaf battery modules to determine their states of charge and health. Fixed and maintained the 3D printer.
