Brennen Thomas Email and Phone Number
Inspired to pursue Chemical Engineering by my engineer father and biology professor mother, I came to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's high caliber program to pursue the major at the highest level. Getting involved with undergraduate research my first year introduced me to the world of asking thought-provoking questions and finding answers to them, something I new I wanted to do with the rest of my life. My work within the research field has been at the cross section of foundational organic chemistry and its applications to biology, specifically in the photoacoustic imaging and cancer treatment world. Gaining strong independent research skills, such as critical thinking, optimization, technical communication, and creativity, I have made strides in the laboratory setting to sharpen my skills as a young scientist. Through my time in research, I found a passion for pharmaceutical development, desiring to be at the forefront of human health. Taking my skills and interests to Lilly, I gained valuable, first-hand experience with working on living-saving projects, deepening my interests in the industry. Combining my past experiences with my motivation, efficiency, and leadership abilities, I hope to use my skills to develop the next generation of molecules that have the potential to save millions of lives.

By providing a tour of our buildings and other areas, describing student life, classroom experiences, and campus opportunities, I am instrumental in helping engineers find their home. -
President Of ReactUniversity Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Apr 2022 - PresentUrbana-Champaign AreaReaching and Educating America's Chemists of Tomorrow (REACT) is a university outreach program that partners with the School of Chemical Sciences to inspire the future generation of researchers and scholars in STEM. By traveling the area's elementary, middle, and high schools, we engage over 30 classrooms in hands-on demonstrations and experiments that teach simple, yet fascinating chemical phenomena. Our hope is that the student's we work with get excited about learning more to potentially pursue it at a higher level later down the road. As President of the organization, I am the key facilitator of our work, providing a clear definition of the work for the program and helping to manage 18 board members and over 100 volunteers per semester. I also serve as the point of contact for the administrative work, partnering closely with our faculty supervisor and department. -

My work has been instrumental in helping to advance the field of photoacoustic imaging and photosensitizer technologies. I have presented my research at the 2021 and 2023 East Central Illinois American Chemical Society Undergraduate Research Conference and the inaugural 2023 Cancer Center at Illinois Undergraduate Symposium. -
Committee Member Of Engineering Outreach BureauUniversity Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Aug 2020 - PresentUrbana-Champaign AreaEngineering Outreach Bureau (EOB) is the committee in UIUC's Engineering Council responsible for recruitment of the next generation of engineers. My work on the committee has been instrumental in the development of informational webinars for prospective, engaging the community, and exciting incoming students. Primarily, my work has focused on a 3-day long event know as SITE where accepted students are invited to learn more about our programs through a variety of fun and informational events. Working closely with the team, this event is completely student run and is instrumental in bringing in top talent to UIUC. -
Tda Summer InternEli Lilly And Company May 2023 - Sep 2023Indianapolis, Indiana, United StatesIn this role, I developed novel peptide-RNA conjugates for testing in vitro and in vivo. During my time, I gained invaluable skills in peptide and oligonucleotide synthesis, purification by high-performance liquid chromatography, molecular characterization, genetic modality development, and molecular optimization. My work led to the synthesis of over 40 compounds, with 24 new molecules being registered into the company database.
