Energy Policy AnalystTexas Public Policy Foundation Aug 2018 - Jun 2020Austin, Texas AreaThe Texas Public Policy Foundation is a nonprofit research institute whose mission is to promote and defend liberty, personal responsibility, and free enterprise in Texas and the world by educating policymakers and the public through policy research and outreach. My job involves data acquisition and analysis, fact-checking, and content creation for Life:Powered, which is an initiative to raise America's energy IQ and advance limited-government principles that encourage the development of energy resources to improve the human condition. It is an exciting role where I get to apply my knowledge of fossil fuels, utilities, and renewable energy to some of the most important issues of our time. -
Technical Consultant To The BoardPwrjoule Llc Jul 2018 - Oct 2020Austin, Texas AreaPWRJoule is an early-stage company that is developing a Li-ion micro-particle flow battery for large scale energy storage applications. I helped the company prove the technology for initial patent filings, assess the technology and market landscape, and bring on new partners.

ResearcherDimensional Fund Advisors Mar 2017 - Jun 2018Austin, Texas AreaThe research team at Dimensional is tasked with creating the world’s best investment products, using sound academic research to produce exceptional long-term returns. Additionally, the team assists the client-service teams during conferences and client visits and produces papers and other materials to educate clients about Dimensional’s investment philosophies. During my time at Dimensional, I contributed to these efforts in the following ways- I created a model using R and SQL code that calculated probabilities of default for corporate bonds as part of a larger effort to develop high yield bond products.- I managed our process for answering questions from our client teams, improved our recording process, and cut our average response time from 4 to 3 days.- I added new analytical pieces to the MATLAB code underlying our retirement models and wrote a blog post on our retirement investing philosophy for S&P Dow Jones. -
Consulting EngineerSuperior Optimization Ltd Feb 2012 - Jul 2016Austin, Texas AreaI helped Superior find better battery technologies to pair with off-grid solar panels that power communication and optimization equipment for oil and gas wells, primarily in Texas and Oklahoma. Lead acid batteries only last an average of two years in these applications, costing Superior's customers thousands of dollars per well in replacements and downtime. We developed best practices to improve the current systems and worked with a Li-ion battery supplier to develop batteries that can last at least 7-8 years in these applications. Throughout this project, I have done extensive market research, met with a half dozen reps at potential battery suppliers, gained sales experience by working with Superior's customers, coordinated Superior employees as a project leader, and acquired knowledge of how batteries are used in remote power applications (design parameters, failure modes, standards, safety, etc.). -
Application Development EngineerBlack Diamond Structures Llc Jan 2016 - May 2016Austin, Texas AreaBlack Diamond Structures is a joint venture between Molecular Rebar Design and SABIC that is commercializing applications for MRD's revolutionary discrete carbon nanotube technology. My team was developing products for lead acid battery producers worldwide, from the largest U.S. and Chinese manufacturers to small and midsize regional manufacturers. My job responsibilities included - Engaging with customers to recommend a product that suited their needs; - Ensuring proper implementation of our products in customers' battery manufacturing processes; - Assisting customers with 12 V battery testing; - Providing technical support to our sales and marketing team; and - Coordinating internal and external product development. In my time with the company, I delivered a conference presentation to the largest lead acid battery producers in India, assisted with launching our India sales team, and contributed to product development with our U.S. and European customers. I also gained a broad knowledge of lead acid battery manufacturing and testing processes and application needs, as well as a deep understanding of the fundamental chemistry and technical challenges. -
Graduate Research AssistantUniversity Of Texas At Austin Jun 2010 - Aug 2015Austin, Texas AreaMy project team explored three novel chemistries for utility-scale energy storage. My focus was the development of a redox flow battery that uses nitrobenzene, an organic redox active liquid, as both the solvent and the negative electrode. In addition to studying the basic chemistry, reaction mechanisms and electrolytes, which led to two peer-reviewed publications, I developed and tested a full prototype flow battery. Through this project, I have gained an understanding of fundamental and applied electrochemistry from some of the best electrochemists in the academic world and a deep knowledge of cutting-edge battery technologies. My previous project involved the design and simulation of a direct methanol fuel cell with the goal of using materials properties and design parameters to maximize performance and minimize fuel crossover. Through this project, I developed proficiency in MATLAB and C and published two peer-reviewed papers. -
Teaching AssistantUniversity Of Texas At Austin Sep 2009 - May 2011Austin, TxI taught two sections of ME 111L, a materials lab course for mechanical engineers, during the 2009-2010 year and one section during the 2010-2011 year. I was responsible for the entire class, from preparing and giving lectures to directing laboratory work to preparing and grading exams and assignments. This experience sharpened my presentation skills and prepared me for the presentations, networking, and consulting that occupied the majority of my time outside the lab during the second half of my graduate career. -
Assistant Financial AnalystRosbottom Interests May 2008 - Aug 2008Dallas, TxDuring my time with Rosbottom Interests, we were a low to mid-market private equity firm with over 50 companies under management and nearly $1 billion in revenue. As an assistant analyst, I was responsible for helping the lead analysts with all aspects of their work, and I was exposed to a full range of small business finance and management subjects. My primary tasks included identifying new acquisition targets in energy and healthcare, due diligence of over a dozen targeted companies, creating marketing materials and books to send to financing partners, and performing financial analysis and forecasting for our portfolio companies.
