About Brent Mcbride
I develop and demonstrate remote sensors to learn about Earth's atmosphere. Part of my work developing the Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (HARP), a small-satellite instrument, will help climate scientists study aerosols and clouds from space in new and exciting ways.HARP measures the way aerosols and clouds scatter light from many different viewpoints. We can use this new information to infer the optical, shape, size, and loading properties of aerosols and clouds. HARP measurements in space over a long period of time can help address many challenges related to climate: ■ the interactions between aerosols and clouds■ cloud growth, lifetime, brightness, and predicting the onset of precipitation■ the global fluctuations and identification of aerosol type and composition■ the frequency and extent of clouds in global climate models■ the impact of clouds and aerosols to global energy balance.Small-satellites, like HARP, improve the way we understand our climate and prove that high-quality science does not require a large taxpayer cost. Assistant Research Scientist (Gestar-Ii And Umbc)
Assistant Research Scientist
I direct and implement the calibration, validation, and instrument science for HARP2 on the NASA Plankton-Aerosol-Cloud-ocean Ecosystem (PACE), OreSat, and the GRASP-AirPhoton Multi-Angle Polarimeter (GAPMAP) missions.
Senior Research Scientist
I enhanced aspects of the operational cal/val and algorithm development for the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) instruments on NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites. I integrated co-incident multi-angle and/or polarimetric data, vector radiative transfer modeling, and deep learning approaches to improve the MODIS calibration. This work laid the foundation for instrument performance monitoring for NPP, JPSS-1 and -2, PACE, and AOS missions.
Instrument Scientist
I led aspects of the development of a small satellite payload at all stages: optical design, baseline performance calibration, deployment, algorithm development, science retrieval, and on-orbit trending. This instrument, the Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (HARP), won Small Satellite of the Year 2020 from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and is the first American instrument of its kind in space. This work paved the way for aircraft instrumentation (Airborne HARP) and a highly optimized HARP2 onboard the upcoming NASA PACE mission.
