In addition, I delivered approximately eighty percent of the course lectures.

Industrial Hygienist - Chemical Hygiene Officer

In this position, I was responsible for ensuring the safety and health of personnel on campus who work with hazardous chemicals. Duties included reviewing Laboratory Safety Plans for all principal investigators on campus to ensure compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450) as well as other applicable OSHA and EPA standards, investigation of laboratory accidents and incidents, and technical support for personnel who store, use, and dispose chemicals. I frequently performed air sampling (both personal and area) in response to employee concerns, EHS concerns, or due to regulatory requirements. I also performed in-depth inspections of laboratory environments for lab workers who were pregnant or contemplating pregnancy, and provide laboratory safety training as needed. I created the formaldehyde online training module that all students and employees with formaldehyde exposure must take, and co-wrote the 2007 edition of the UNC Laboratory Safety Manual. I was a member of the UNC Laboratory and Chemical Safety Committee, and was responsible for choosing agenda items, keeping minutes, and conducting the meetings.I served on the EHS Emergency Response Team, and have received HAZWOPER First Responder-Operations Level training, with annual refresher training. I am medically cleared and fit tested on both air-purifying respirators and SCBAs. I also served on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) at UNC, and reviewed all protocols for vertebrate animal use to ensure that EHS concerns were addressed.Along with internal training for UNC employees and students, I also taught training courses through the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center, on topics such as lead hazards and abatement, respiratory protection and fit testing, and the health hazards of nanomaterials.

(4/2001 - 2/2004) Staff Industrial Hygienist: Specific duties of this position included writing policies and developing procedures to ensure that the OSH Division’s Industrial Hygiene Inspectors visited the worksites with the greatest potential health and safety hazards. In this role, I authored or co-authored the OSH Division’s Special Emphasis Programs for reducing employee exposure to lead, silica, and methylene chloride, and was responsible for program maintenance. I also served as the Program Administrator for the OSH Division’s Respiratory Protection Program. Other duties included creating education and training materials to provide training classes for new Industrial Hygiene Inspectors, and presentations to industry groups. I supervised a staff of three persons: two Safety Compliance Officers who received and transcribed occupational safety and health complaints from employees and citizens, and one Equipment Technician, who was responsible for calibrating and maintaining the OSH Division’s industrial hygiene equipment, including noise dosimeters, velometers, personal sampling pumps, and gas meters. (1/1998 - 4/2001): Industrial Hygiene InspectorThe primary duty was performing industrial hygiene inspections of North Carolina work sites to determine compliance with the OSH Act. I completed the OSH Division’s training program, and performed 108 independent compliance inspections, including complex assignments such as ergonomic inspections, asbestos inspections, and pesticide complaint inspections. Other duties included serving as an official mentor to an Industrial Hygiene Inspector trainee, and as an unofficial mentor for several other trainees, conducting training sessions on industrial hygiene sampling equipment, and serving on the Workplan Development Committee. I was promoted to the Staff Industrial Hygienist position in April 2001.
