Mozambique

We completed the research of the Coconut plantations in a number of areas of the Inhambane province of Mozambique. (identifying cultivars with better yield potential, greater disease resistance and suitability to local climate). Created a model for the collection of Copra which involved the local communities living in the area. (Social training and community upliftment strategies). The study, Identification, and documentation of the negative effects of incorrect cultural practices on the existing plantations. This included a specific focus on age, variety, health, current production, and yield loss. Document and map the areas the plantation covers. Develop and implement a farmer education program specifically designed for the local population. • Write a business plan for a future oil feedstock plantation & research. (most useful crops for oil production). • Survey completed on the land allocated.• Compile a comprehensive summary of the staff, machinery, plant material, budgets, general planning, and staff management required. Achievements: The coconut tree nursery was built and established. A sustainable replanting program was designed and implemented. Copra collection points were built and operational. A logistics program involving tractors, trucks, and trailers was commissioned to collect Copra from the rural areas and delivered to central collection points. Maintenance and health care programs were established to assist the local communities to care for their Coconut trees. Water collection points, involving the drilling of boreholes and equipping them with pumps were commissioned as part of the community upliftment projects linked to the plantation project.

Clear vegetation, identify and establish arable land suitable for the planting and production of cotton.• Manage 240 Ha fields planting, cultivating and harvesting of cotton. • Train staff in the safe use of tractors and machines to prepare and fertilize the soil. • Supervise the use of hand tools to weed and thin the crops to get rid of weak plants and weeds. Scouting the lands for insects and spraying to control the pests.• Training of staff in all sectors of farming from driving and operating tractors to scouting for insects, spraying chemicals, hand-picking cotton, and bush clearing and de-stumping to expand the agricultural land and ordering of materials and stock control. Achievements: The successful growing and production of high-quality grade cotton. Training of staff in the different growing and production skills required for good cotton farming.
