Senior Communication Systems Engineer
CurrentResponsible engineer for the telemetry, tracking and control (TTC) system for both space and ground segments of Astranis's first geostationary communications satellite. In this role I established the system architecture and requirements, developed static and dynamic link analysis tools, managed development of DSP algorithms for the modem and ranging transponder, coordinated integrated test activities, managed key hardware vendors and ground segment providers, and helped lead the effort to get the full integrated system ready for launch and mission operations.
Senior Dsp Engineer
* Link budget analysis for missions interfacing with NASA's Deep Space Network.* Developed a working prototype deep space transponder compatible with NASA's Deep Space Network. For this scrappy project I was responsible for all aspects of the project including requirements definition, algorithm design, simulation, Verilog implementation, verification, and successful compatibility testing with DSN.* Project lead for development of a prototype implementation of the CCSDS Prox1 physical layer and data link layer protocol used by Mars landers and orbiters for relay communications.* Designed and implemented a SQPSK demodulator in GNU Radio to demanding requirements for Doppler handling and low implementation loss for critical satellite TT&C groundstations.
Dsp Engineer
* Developed the baseband signal processing for the Dragon 1 command receiver. Responsibilities included algorithm design, bit-accurate fixed point simulation software development, algorithm optimizations for FPGA implementation, documentation, bench testing on prototype and flight-like hardware, and assistance with verification and debugging of the FPGA firmware. The project was completed within a single calendar year from concept to flight-worthy firmware and has flown in space on multiple missions.* Designed and implemented custom signal processing blocks and flowgraphs for a variety of waveforms using GNU Radio to meet mission specific requirements. This software allowed significant cost savings and flexibility and was adopted widely for test, integration, and groundstations.* Designed the baseband signal processing for a 600 Mbaud OQPSK/QAM modem implemented in an FPGA. Parallelized implementations of an FIR matched filter, continuously variable resampling filter, and LMS adaptive equalizer achieved a throughput of four complex samples per clock cycle.* Lead DSP engineer for the baseband signal processing of the Dragon 2 comm system's digital modem. Responsibilities included requirements definition, algorithm development, bit-accurate simulation software development, detailed documentation, peer review and verification assistance for FPGA implementation, and design validation via extensive testing with flight-like hardware.* Responsible engineer for fixed point simulation software for the Starlink broadband modem. I developed requirements, oversaw a senior modem designer contractor, designed multiple signal processing blocks, performed simulations and analysis, gave presentations and demonstrations to senior management, and led team meetings.
R&D Electrical Engineer
Developed a QPSK modem with TDMA multiple access scheme on an FPGA platform for prototyping products ideas based on near field magnetic induction technology. Responsibilities included baseband algorithm development, simulations, multiple access scheme design, embedded system architecture design, and FPGA implementation. This work culminated in a working prototype with multiple nodes exchanging data in a small star network.
Engineering Intern
Electrical interface design and specification development for a focal plane assembly. Held DoD Secret level security clearance.
Engineering Intern
Anomaly investigation for on-orbit satellite electronics.
Engineering Intern
Revision and review of ground command scripts for satellite payload.
