  • Carleton University
    Hockey Education Instructor
    Carleton University 2015 - 2019
    Ottawa, Canada Area
As a hockey instructor following a long hockey career, there are a few things that stood out to me about the experience. First and foremost, it's incredibly fulfilling to be able to share the knowledge and skills that I've developed over the years with the next generation of hockey players. One of the things I appreciate most about teaching hockey is the opportunity to make a positive impact on young people's lives. Hockey is a sport that requires a great deal of discipline, hard work, and perseverance, and by instilling these values in my students, I feel like I'm helping them develop not only as hockey players but as individuals as well.Another thing that I've noticed as an instructor is that teaching hockey requires a slightly different skill set than playing it. When I was a player, my focus was almost entirely on my own performance and the performance of my team. As an instructor, however, I had to be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals, each with their own unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles.I learned that in order to be an effective instructor, you have to adapt your teaching style to meet the needs of each individual student. Some students respond well to constructive criticism, while others need more positive reinforcement. Some students are visual learners, while others learn best by doing. By being able to recognize these differences and adjust my approach accordingly, I was able to help each student reach their full potential.
  • U Sports

Five seasons in the Ontario Hockey League - the native of Scarborough, Ont., Gustavsen got his feet wet with the Ottawa 67’s during the 2010-11 campaign before making the team full-time the following fall. A diligent defensive forward, Gustavsen spent the next three seasons with the 67’s before joining the Belleville Bulls in their final year in 2014-15. • Toronto District School Board
    Landscaper
Toronto District School Board May 2009 - Sep 2014
    Toronto, Canada Area
My first summer job - at the age of 15, following my first year of high school, my parents recommended I get my first job to help pay for all the expensive hockey sticks I was breaking. I will never forget the sound and vibration of my alarm clock on my first day... 5:30 AM...I went on to work 5 summer contracts with the TDSB. After each hockey season, I would return to Toronto, put on my work gloves, and get to work. Each season I was part of something different, which I thought was awesome. I laid asphalt, built retaining walls, cut down large trees, drove tractors, managed crews and much more. This experience taught me how to work with my hands, the importance of safe operational practices and to understand that you need to go to bed early if you have to wake up at 5:30 AM.
