Within three months the team under my direction, developed a data acquisition system to resolve a key problem. We firstly experimented with off-the-shelf components to prove the concept, We took this further to develop an IP65 robust acquisition system that was successfully deployed to a mine site. The role required mechanical engineering and solid works skills to produce machined and cut and fold components, that came together seamlessly. Resulted in a third patent being filed.

During my eleven years as an academic I was responsible for the management, delivery and development of two undergraduate courses and two masters level courses. I was required to prepare and deliver the lecture and laboratory content of these courses. I was also responsible for the management of the students enrolled in these courses and the associated teaching staff. I was responsible for ensuring the courses were delivered within university policies and at high quality level. My teaching was primarily focused on Embedded Electronics, Digital Design and Computer Architecture. Specifically, I have taught a second year introduction to microprocessor course for eleven semesters a third year computer architecture course for eight semesters, and a final year advanced embedded electronics course for 6 semesters. This academic position has given me the opportunity to explore various teaching methods and develop strong communication skills. I have actively pursued the use of blended learning technology in my courses and as a result, developed from scratch a course website built on this technology. Through the use of forums, online topic videos and associated printed material, I have redeveloped my course to an almost purely online delivery, only supported by in-person problem based workshops.During my time as an academic, my courses and teaching style have been rated highly by students. I was voted “Graduand’s Lecturer of the Year” in 2011 and have received numerous commendations throughout my academic career, from higher level management at Griffith. At various times throughout my appointment at Griffith, I have been a representative on both the school committee and the IT coordinators committee. I was the voice of reason and ensured my fellow academics were given the representation they deserved.
  • Griffith University, Australia
Head Trainer / Director - Embeddded Systems Training Program
Griffith University, Australia Jan 2006 - Dec 2008
n 2006, Griffith University provided me with the challenging role of head trainer and director of the Embedded System Software Training Program. This program was created to provide training for FullCast Technology, Tokyo, an international technology recruiter. FullCast required a program that could give graduate business students necessary skills so that they could be employed as embedded software developers in Japanese companies. My role in this program began with the development of the curriculum for an 11 month long training program, that not only met the academic needs of Griffith University but also the real-world requirements of FullCast Technology. My role as head trainer of this program required me to manage the day to day running of the program. I was responsible for the hiring of sessional lecturers and laboratory demonstrators. I was the primary liaison between FullCast and Griffith University via either weekly emails or video calls. I was given control of the annual operating budget of $150,000, which was used to hire staff and purchase equipment. This program ran well under budget, allowing 44% of the funds to be returned to the school. The development of course material for this program and four additional courses was also my responsibility.Sadly, this program ended in December 2008 as a result of the strong Australian dollar and restructuring issues inside FullCast Technology. Across the three years that this course ran 23 students graduated with a Diploma in Embedded Software Development, generated a profit of $200k for the school, employed two full-time staff and sixteen sessional staff, and upgraded many of the teaching facilities within the school.
