While working in a locomotor control laboratory, I designed and built custom pedaling devices for experimenting in an MR environment. Utilizing one of my devices, I studied human locomotion by observing neural activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and monitoring muscle activity with electromyography (EMG). Specifically, I was interested in the different control strategies between left, right, and bilateral motor activities. This device will next be used to look at motor control of people with hemiparesis after stroke.
