Software development used to be a field where you could enter right out of high school. And I did.It was a fascinating apprenticeship model with a diversity of people from all walks of life whose degrees and vocations were often NOT in IT. There was a truly cross-disciplinary environment with History, Physics, English and Math majors; mechanics, accountants, school teachers and in my case musicians. People, their jobs and business were at the center of my field and often, we'd simply sit with an end user for a day or more to understand their job before any coding started. Over the decades I've watched software development morph from a business responsive discipline into a series of subject-matter-silos not dissimilar to the evolution of specialists in the Medical field. And like the medical field, I believe the patient may be suffering as a result... It's a recurring theme that IT wants to talk about the practice of software development rather than the patient. And whenever we cycle this way we are foregoing the best-interests of the client and replacing it with best-practices. Practices our industry just happen to dictate. I believe that we need to back off from talking purely about our own metrics and start talking about people and those interactions. We need to cycle software development away from its current technology-centric positioning back into company culture and its people-centric roots. I believe that this will create better software.Specialties: IT Business DevelopmentTechnical WriterCommunications

Owner / V.P. Business DevelopmentAdventuretech Aug 2004 - May 2012Overland Park, Ks, UsDuring the last 2 years as owner at AdventureTech, I made the career transition from developer to business-developer. My goal was to culturally transform that company from a "butts-in-seats-it-all-pays-the-same" legacy contracting model into a unique subject-matter-expert marketplace thought leader. It started with culture. It always starts with culture and knowing who you are. You have to be able to seamlessly align your human capital to the external brand picture you wish to present to the world. Encouraging leadership to understand newer business models that engage the potential of their employees is an integral element to that cultural evolution. So too was the powerful introduction of social media. It allowed us to create a unique company voice to educate the community on important software development issues facing our industry. Consistently blogging on disruptive topics opened doors to new business previously closed to older failed sales methods and it gave AdventureTech a personality. Revenue growth and business development are also leadership responsibilities - they can't be delegated to a sales person. Ownership needs to discover and personally advocate their vision and mission to the community in order to create real competitive advantage. That requires letting go of older ways, reeducating yourself and your company with more modern approaches and seeking the help of local experts. Creating community and marketplace advocacy is harder, but it makes for more sustainable growth. There was a general community excitement - a sort of buzz generated about the things we were presenting. People were listening and becoming interested in a field that typically only speaks to the choir. This was the attractor status I had envisioned and created for AdventureTech: Thought Leadership in Kansas City. -
