About Brett Caplan
I believe that initiative, self-drive, passion, and a good sense of humor is the key to being successful.When I took my first computer science course Freshman year of high school, I knew immediately I found my passion. I had the opportunity to learn the basics of how computers worked and got to experiment with programming for the first time using HTML. I was eager to learn more. In the next three years I worked my way up through the higher-level courses offered by my school and decided to apply to the University of Maryland as a Computer Science major.What I quickly learned in high school and my first four semesters of college was how vast of a field computer science was, and how many opportunities existed. For me, this is one of the most exciting things about computer science. There are opportunities available at almost every type of company, working on almost any project you could imagine. My favorite application of computer science so far has been software engineering. I've enjoyed experimenting with programming through my college courses, and I have further explored the field by developing an Android application in my free time. I've also been working on campus since my sophomore year as a software developer on a small team, and I recently completed my first summer software engineering internship. Some of my favorite technologies/languages I've been exposed to so far include Java, Android Studio, Scala, Google's Firestore NoSQL database, MongoDB, and Angular, to name a few. I think a great way to describe the Computer Science field is that answering one question often leads to ten more that are unknown, it really is a field of never-ending innovation and change. I'm someone who loves learning new skills and tools and applying them to real-world applications. I know I have a lot more to learn in this field, and I'm excited for what the future holds!
