As Chair of the RESNET Technical Committee, I set the priorities for the Technical Committee and led the team in achieving our goals. The RESNET Board of Directors disbanded the Technical Committee at the annual Board meeting (at my request) in favor of the Standards Development Committee.

I was one of two subject matter experts that helped develop the curriculum for the LEED for Homes Green Rater course. I also facilitate the course at national and regional levels, in addition to helping the USGBC develop lower level courses related to the LEED for Homes program.

I was responsible for developing and maintaining technical standards and guidelines; developing training; conducting quality assurance reviews of auditors, audits and contractors; preparing training presentations and manuals; overseeing scheduling of training; conducting training; tracking training participation and quality improvement; tracking energy audit program results; consulting and coordinating with RESNET and other standards setting organizations to enhance the value and market effectiveness of Texas HERO programs; and obtaining certification of training by RESNET and continuing education credit by others as appropriate.

I established the creative vision, business strategy and execution of that strategy for the company. We focused on educational outreach, working with colleges, professional associations, utility companies, and other stakeholders to provide the latest information on advanced building practices that are both cost and resource effective, including the HERS Rater and Field Inspector Courses. Our RESNET-accredited training program had an average pass rate of 80% on the National Core Competency exam and we consistently received high marks from those who attended our other courses as well. We were also a Building America Builders Challenge Educational Partner and provided ACCA Manual J load calculations, helping HVAC contractors select equipment according to Manual S and size ducts according to Manual D.

I created the business strategy, wrote the business plan, and executed strategy through a collaborative team environment. Under my leadership, we increased revenue 42%, reduced costs 25%, increased our customer base, improved our systems and processes and increased our service offerings to include NAHB National Green Building Program verification, Building America Builders Challenge verification and became a LEED for Homes Provider.

I was adjunct faculty for Cleveland State Community College and taught a HERS Rater course for the college as part of the adult education certificate program and two-year degree program in energy efficient residential construction.

I provided technical assistance to educators, architects, developers, and builders through residential commissioning, energy modeling and analysis, training and HERS ratings. I also co-taught the HERS Rater Course for Southface, developed and taught the HERS Rater Course for Home Energy Concepts, and taught high performance homebuilding courses, energy code workshops and consumer education seminars on energy conservation and efficiency through a consulting agreement with Cleveland State Community College (Cleveland, TN) and helped them develop their curriculum for an adult education certificate program and a two-year degree program. The College was awarded the 2008 TN Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award in the category of Energy Leadership due to our collaborative effort. I also performed Manual J load calculations.

I oversaw development of urban properties slated for new construction, participated in the design review and make sure the homes were built to specifications. I also rewrote the construction specifications to meet the criteria for high performance homes. One of our projects was included in the LEED for Homes pilot program and was the subject of the affordable single-family housing charrette at GreenBuild 2005 in Atlanta, GA.

I trained builders, architects, designers, trade contractors and others in high performance design and construction. I managed the regional expansion of EarthCraft House™, a residential environmentally responsible construction program. I worked with The Noisette Company on the revitalization of the City of North Charleston (incorporating EarthCraft House as a key component of this effort), as well as builders in Greenville, Charleston, Savannah, and Birmingham. I was also involved in the early stages of the Coastal Green Developer program that was developed for Coastal Georgia. I wrote proposals, developed budgets, managed Fellows and Interns who worked on these projects, saw the projects through to completion and wrote final reports. I taught classes to code officials and architects for their continuing education units, and developed the curriculum for Southface’s Homebuilding School and EarthCraft House Inspector training. Additionally, I managed the training contract for the Department of Energy’s Building America program, and developed and delivered 10 workshops in 4 months in 6 states. I was part of the Residential Technical Management Team at Southface that developed our program standards (EarthCraft House, Home Performance with ENERGY STAR and RightChoice for Jackson EMC) through a consensus process. I also served on the Advanced Rater Task Force for RESNET, the national Home Energy Ratings System organization.

I worked as an EarthCraft House Inspector to ensure the quality of the program standards were maintained. I helped spearhead the expansion of EarthCraft House into adjoining states. Additionally, I was also one of the instructors for Project Reach (DeKalb County’s home energy clinic for low income families), the EarthCraft House Builders training and the GA Energy Code. I also developed the new Southface HERS Rater course.

Dillon Construction was a construction-consulting firm that provided assistance with sustainable design and construction of homes. Our focus was on structural integrity, health of occupants, durability and environmental impact. I also published a semi-monthly newsletter “Environmental Building Resources” with a focus on sustainable residential construction and design that was distributed from Tennessee to New Mexico.

I re-organized the construction department in this volunteer-based non-profit organization. I provided scheduling, material lists, detailed instructions on how to build energy efficient homes, organized a Building Advisory Council comprised of construction professionals and allied professions (Urban Design Studio, Regional Planning Agency, Chattanooga Code Officials) to provide input on how Habitat homes should be built by this affiliate. I performed the functions of construction coordinator, warehouse manager, material procurement and site supervisor. During my tenure, this affiliate built the only homes in the Chattanooga area to the ENERGY STAR standard and reduced costs by $5,000 per home and decreased production time. I oversaw construction on $443,000 hard costs during this time (12 homes) that had an appraised value of approximately $936,000.
