Director, Software Engineering
- Help to professionalize the delivery pipeline with Continuous Integration and Unit Testing culture- Championing the use of TeamCity for this purpose, and now have over 20 software solutions on the platform, including use of AWS CodeDeploy for deployment to development environments. This includes Web Sites (MVC), Web Services, Windows Services and even AWS Lambda functions written in Python.- Growing the unit testing footprint while mentoring the team on architecture and techniques to support the CI initiative.- Took key role in working on complicated new application feature, rewriting the UI to use Angular 1.5x’s new component-based design, including some unit tests for the javascript components and controllers.
Software Engineer, Lead
- Aiding in the design and re-architecture of legacy applications- Helping to improve CI and automated testing- Mentoring team on process and architecture
Vp Technology
After LPL acquired Fortigent, I continued in the same role, but was drawn more and more into high-level integration discussions and other internal initiatives. This eventually led to promotion to VP of Technology with responsibilities for process control, team growth and management, as well as functional reporting responsibilities. Also got pulled into higher level strategic thinking across LPL as they tried to wrestle with difficult technical debt and process issues and started to look towards Fortigent leadership to assist them with that.Eventually, LPL decided to close our offices in Rockville and I declined relocation to Charlotte. I continued on an extended contract for several months to finalize some important work and assist in the transition.
Senior Software Engineer
- Senior Software Engineer for most of my time here, working on almost every aspect of Fortigent’s systems, from data warehousing initiatives, middle tier services and logical layers, all the way to front-end client coding and site design/usability.- Slowly took on more of a somewhat informal leadership role on architectural fronts, priority negotiation, figuring out roadmaps, scalability initiatives, site rebuild and redesign, hiring and process improvement and client collaboration.- Spearheaded initiatives to build a near-real-time data pipeline. This involved the design and construction of an asynchronous data processing service to enable a loosely coupled and easily extensible architecture. System was put into production in Dec. 2010. It has since become the baseline for 8 different data processing systems crucial to Fortigent’s warehousing strategy.- Advocated strongly in favor of multiple initiatives to re-architect core pieces of software architecture, including a complete rewrite of customer-facing web portal using ASP.NET MVC. Site was completed and launched, with the old site being fully retired in November of 2013. Worked personally on many important pages within the site and on pages that introduced knockout to the team… which quickly spread to the rest of the site.
Senior Software Engineer / Chief Architect
- Worked on a variety of software projects in nearly 10 years with the firm, starting off as an engineer, and progressing into a more senior role as Chief Architect and team lead.- A primary engineer in the development and design of www.investyles.com, a web-based prospecting system leveraging IXI’s proprietary data to improve market targeting and ROI.- A primary engineer and architect of www.wealthlinx.com, a web-based data delivery platform engineered to satisfy the analytical needs of IXI’s member-firms. Users are able to perform ad-hoc data exports, run pre-defined reports, and create and customize a variety of thematic maps using MapInfo’s MapXtreme .NET tools to provide the analytical basis for solving a variety of business problems- Team lead for small group of software and QA engineers. Responsible for allocation of tasks, leading design discussions, spearheading projects and keeping them on schedule, and maintaining operations for existing systems.- Participant in the architecture and design of a Kimball-style data warehouse to expose a myriad of IXI data in a dimensional fashion.- I have worked on all aspects of the development including writing of stored procedures and often complex database queries against large data warehouses, design and construction of middle tier architectures, and layout and construction of the web-based User Interfaces. Front-end work includes work using JQuery, MooTools (an early competitor to JQuery) and AJAX, applying usability philosophies and focus group testing to improve the user experience.- Worked on construction of an entire Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) built using Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) framework to create a multi-use service layer that is both scalable and maintainable. System leverages the use of virtualization to allow us to scale components of the SOA as needed and to create more streamlined operations.
Software Engineer
My first job as an intern while I finished up at UMD.Started my career here doing Java and Oracle. Near the end we had moved into Classic ASP and SQL Server. Helped out with doing builds and dealing with integration issues long before CI tools were available.
