Education Outreach InternPaleontological Research Institution May 2014 - Jul 2014Ithaca, New York, UsI received invaluable experience with communicating science to the public. By practicing professionalism, organizational skills, and working with researchers in my field, I learned how to bridge the gap between scientific information and the public understanding of science. After assessing the institution’s available resources by curating and organizing the current collections, the resulting program, “The Treasure in Your Terrain: Rocks, Minerals and the Beginning of Earth” was produced for camp (grades K-6) and school group (grades K-8) demographics. The program was inspired by Ithaca's rich geologic history and was taught to over 100 campers during the summer of 2014. The learning goals align with the Earth Science Literacy Initiative’s “Big Ideas” and involved Earth science subjects including minerals, fossils, rocks, and the geologic timescale.I also had the opportunity to be a small part of the Syracuse University Lava Project, which is a collaboration between sculptor Bob Wysocki and geologist Jeff Karson at SU. I was involved in conducting a front-end evaluation for Dr. Carlyn Buckler, Adj. Professor of Science Museum Studies in the Cooperstown Graduate Program for Museum Studies, SUNY, who is working with Dr. Karson to write a proposal to NSF to fund several education outreach projects. My job was to find out what the public wants to see in an exhibit about lava flows and record what exactly they find fascinating about lava. Thanks to the SU Lava Project, every interviewee had the incredible chance to witness a real lava pour first-hand! This internship allowed me to weave together my skills in the Earth sciences and augment my knowledge about STEM education to include more diverse audiences and a breadth and depth of program experiences for the public. I was able to observe and understand the process of proposal writing, grant implementation, and collaborative projects in the Informal Science Education industry. -
